When I worked in a kitchen, one of the cooks was real sensitive about his cooking. If someone sent the same item back to the kitchen, more than once, he would sabotage it. His favorite tactic was to scrape a spatula across the bottom of his shoe, before picking up the customer’s steak and putting it on a plate.

One time, a lady had him redo a western omelet three times. On the fourth try, he blew his nose into her omelet.

Even today, after working there over 30 years ago, it’s rare for me to eat at a restaurant.

I think i have a million of them. i worked at a real independent hippie type place for a long time. There were termites in the walls of this extremely old historic building. One day during Thursday lunch they broke free and swarmed the hallway. Try explaining that one to your guests. The worst thing ever though has to be when the dishwasher quit working. The machine not the person. This dishpit was not up to par so they had to wash dishes by hand. They filled up trashcans from outback with water to rinse the dishes in. No sanitizing, no cleaning the trashcans. Yeah. Yummy. There were constantly crazy people coming in from the streets trying to get money from the workers and customers alike. One day during lunch, this lunatic lady walked in with a rooster and asked us if we would buy the rooster from her. We asked why and she replied "well, I thought ya'll could clean it and cook it and sell it." Thank God everyone turned it down.

I worked at a restaurant for about 8 years where everything was supposed to be so clean and sanitary. However in the kitchen, the cooks would smoke while they were cooking. They were disgusting! One day while they were stuffing chicken breasts for that evenings dinner they were smoking and they were ashing their cigarettes in the chicken breasts. I thought I was going to throw up.
As a customer, I went to McDonalds once and I saw one of the guys in the back drop a burger on the floor and another guy dared him to serve it anyway. He did. That was the first and last time I ever ate there!

That's terrible . . . I don't have any super gross moments to share from my days working in the restaurant. There's two events I'd like to share though.

1. We kept our pasta salad in 5 gallon buckets. I had gotten the bucket out to refill the pasta salad and managed to spill about half the bucket on the prep table. Of course I grabbed a trash can and had just started cleaning it up when the owner came back and wanted to know what I was doing . . . he had me put the pasta back in the bucket so it could be served. I couldn't believe it!

2. On a funny note, we had this hostess who was very much on the ditzy side (a very nice girl though), who literally handed a customer a piece of garlic bread out of her hand. The customer's bread had been forgotten, so the hostess opened up the bread drawer grabbed a piece a garlic bread with her bare hand-- didn't bother putting it on a plate or in a basket and carried it across the restaurant and said, "Here you go."

Let's see. One time a large water pipe in the basement storage room broke during a busy Saturday dinner and rained water on equipment and supplies.

Another time the dishwasher broke and the dishboy had to do dishes in the sink right behind me at the grill while we waited for Ecolabs to show up.

Another time the Broaster leaked hot oil all over the floor and we were scrambling with towels to mop it up while sliding all over the place and cooking at the same time. I closed early to prevent injuries.

The cops called me early one morning saying I'd been broken into. They even took footprints off the floor. (They caught the guys)

My ex-"fiance" if you could call him that, took off in the middle of the night with all my equipment. And the cops wouldn't do anything about it.

Now you can see why I'm retired!

Back in the day when I worked at McDonald's they would let the burgers fall on the floor sometimes and serve them anyway.

one time i was at this mexican restaurant and as i'm chewing a bite of enchilada i notice something a little off. so i spit out the food and there was a piece of one of those heavy duty metal scouring pads in the enchilada. it was probably the worst tooth-to-substance feeling i've ever had in my life.
