Brothers can feel free to contribute to this as well:)

sisters.. I was considering the account of Mary and Martha in the bible. That these two sisters are a true picture and pattern for us as we serve in our own churches and homes.
Both Mary and Martha sat at the feet of the Lord to listen to His word. Some would say that Martha was Miss busy busy and was too occupied with serving the Lord with food to sit still at His feet to hear what He had to say...
Some would also say that Mary chose the better way because she dropped everything and sat at the Lord's feet and because of that she truly HEARD what He was saying regarding His death and Resurrection.
I put this to you sisters that we need to be a combination of the two. Having a Serving spirit. One that does not just jump up to do what we THINK the Lord wants but being those who sit at His feet listening to His preference then rising up to serve with a serving spirit all the ones under our care.

I agree with you brother Matt. Truly we need to have a revelation from the Lord in order to know where to proceed. Our serving should come OUT FROM our personal intimate time in the Lord's presence.
I smiled so much when i saw all the brothers responding to this question.
Its too precious!

I actually have thought about this a lot in the past as I tend to be a "Martha" even though I want to be a "Mary". I get frustrated because I want to hurry up and get things done so that I can "be still" and hear God. Of course, things happen....and don't get done until late, and then there is no time left. My best days are when I start off like Mary...no matter what....and just sit at the feet of Jesus and listen....just stop everything and take time. Then I "hear" what He says to me...the rest of the day....and feel His presence closer...so much better. I actually do get more done those days and in a much less stressed way. It's a win win situation and I highly recommend it! Thanks for your very insightful question!

Well youre comparing apples to oranges. Mary and Martha had Jesus, the son of God, right in the flesh, right in front of them, telling them new truths theyve never heard before or anyone for that matter.

By your logic then, you wouldve tried to work and listen to him at the same time? I think the point of the verse is that it is better to crave the word of God rather than earthly things. That is not to say that simple responsibilities in this life arent important, but revelation is first and formost.

it is an thrilling communique to have. by way of fact, I do have faith that ladies could desire to constantly perform freely in even though God presents them and by using this scripture, Paul even recognizes that it incredibly is a rule laid forth in regulation. There are some translations of the Bible that state that line as "i do no longer enable a woman to communicate..." which makes it sound like Paul's decision. i've got heard a lot of human beings say that it grew to become into particular to the individuals and the time that he grew to become into addressing. the tale of Deborah shows us a woman who grew to become into made decide and chief however the pinnacle of the army who consists of communicate to her shows us that the adult males have been curiously having some subjects with being leaders. i do no longer comprehend in comprehensive. My concept is that God does not defy his layout for the relatives and if he's placed the guy by way of fact the pinnacle of the relatives that adult males could desire to go the church. yet, interior the absence of a able guy a extra robust than able woman would be raised up. i will probable get some rocks thrown at me for that one, yet that's what i've got faith.

This summer - as in previous - my church (which has 4 mission churches in the area) suspended Sunday evening worship - encouraging the congregation to go share worship with one of the mission churches - and then instead - assemble for guest ministers to preach a Monday Evening revival service each week. It was called "Monday Night for the Master" and each time I went I caught all sorts of grief from my folks.

They seemed to think it sacreligious to skip Sunday night - and then open for Monday.

Sheesh - God in a box.

It took all Summer to get them to come with me. Each service opened with the scripture reference of Mary and Martha - and our Pastor thanking us for "choosing the better thing" amongst all we could be doing on a Monday Night.

I could have been cooking, cleaning, crocheting, answering Y!A R&S questions... whatever... but it was a blessing to be there this Summer.

Peace.

I am a brother in Christ so......sorry about that.

I've always known that story to tell us that we do need to slow down sometimes and listen to the still, small voice of the Lord within us.

And at times, we need to work......but don't make work our life....so to speak.

It's never a good idea to take on too many ministries at once....we can easily give ourselves "spiritual overload"

I know I'm not a sister, but I'll give my two cents. I think that you are right. We should be eager to serve others, and especially Christ. But when Christ speaks we need to listen. I think that Christians get to wrapped up in trying to do things for Christ that they miss what He is trying to tell them. Good question, God Bless sister.
