It's usually because they deserve it, like for answering a question wrong when there is only 1 correct answer. I don't do it just because I don't agree with the person, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

I give a thumbs down if the answer given is something a retarded monkey would have typed - so needless to say I give a lot of thumbs down!

When they deserve it.
I have noticed that people will give thumbs down for no good reason. I have gotten thumbs down for an answer that was exactly like someone that got a thumbs up. So, I think a lot of people on here are "just for fun" people.

You have a great choice in there, often overlooked: b "to save space". I hate a 12 paragraph answer cut and pasted from wikipedia. I hate having to scroll three minutes to get to the rest of the answers. I will thumbs down to close those long long suckers up.

When the answer is unhelpful or close to but not quite abusive or if the answer is actually incorrect. The most common reason for incorrect answers is not reading the question properly.

I give someone thumbs down when:
1) they show blatant disrespect by giving a non-informative answer that either makes fun of a sensitive and/or serious question
2) they abuse the person who answer the question
3) the advice is outright wrong
I do not give thumbs down if I simply don't agree with the answer. There are so many ways to answer certain questions, different answers are inevitable, so I don't give thumbs down for those.

When someone gives a stupid answer that isn't even funny.
When someone answers a question by just saying that they didn't experience or know what you are talking about.
When someone is obviously posting just to boost their points.
