He does not mean our pumping station...God is talking about the center of our being...our true self.
You can lie to Him when you pray, but God "KNOWS what evil lurks in the hearts of man" (not the "Shaddow", GOD sees into our heart's hidden corners).
IN A PARABLE JESUS SAID A FATHER TOLD HIS 2 SONS TO OBEY...ONE SAID "YES" AND DIDN'T, AND THE OTHER SON SAID "NO" BUT OBEYED!
Don't worship God on sunday, then serve the enemy the other 6 days. The Bible says "obedience is better than sacrifice".
It is too easy to say "yes"...the one who loves God is the one who obeys Him!!! God does not go by the lips, that can lie...he goes by the heart which is always true!
The holy Spirit lives in our heart, and "guides" us. He is the best part of us!
The Word of God says "Out of the abundance of the heart your mouth speaks" We humans can be fooled by lies, but if you listen to what a person says, you will detect where his heart is!

Interesting point, I never thought about it. It could mean that god doesn't have much idea about anatomy. It's people who think that feelings reside in the heart, but they definitely originate in the brain, there is no doubt about it.
The answer could be that either god wants to make sure people know what he is talking about, or people attribute their own thoughts to god. And you always can say that god's reasons will be mysterious to man.

I would point out that God places importance on the new heart He places within a person, and not our heart which is described as being desperately wicked and a heart of stone.

Because religion relies on emotional hooks, not reason. Nearly all the arguments for religion, including Christianity, are emotional. It tries to sway converts by getting them to feel fear, hope, love, guilt, pity, and a whole host of others. It can't really use reason to sway people because reason just isn't on its side. There's no evidence of any gods, but much evidence of gods being man-made.
But emotional manipulation is very effective. Humans have been emotional animals for far longer than rational ones. Therefore, the superstitious nonsense is more attractive than reality.

Your heart as God sees it, is what shows what kind of person you truly are. Those with a heart for others, hardened hearts, and hearts that are open to what God wants. It truly is evidence of who or what we are.

The word heart is an analogy to the physical organ in the body, and that organ is the sustainer of all life. So maybe that is why God places so much emphasis on it.

Because there is no outside tangible evidence for God.
"God lives in our hearts" is another way of saying that he doesn't exist in the tangible world.
You have to believe in God to experience him. There is nothing in nature that works that way. You don't have to believe in Fire to be burnt or believe in wind to be knocked off your feet. But you do have to believe in God in order to feel him.
It is yet another example of why it is very unlikely that a God exists.
