Wow. You're doing great! I'm having trouble thinking of just the basics! I don't think that's too much at all. You're really just making his job easier. As long as you give him the freedom to take requests from guests or add an appropriate song here or there as needed and don't require that he stick to a particular order for the songs you pick out, I don't think it would be stepping on any toes. He'll be able to take the information you've given him and apply it in a way that he as a professional should know will get the party going the way you want it to go. That list will give him an idea of what you like and will help him choose filler songs accordingly. Also, make sure you give him a list of "do not play" songs. These should also all be signed off on in the contract. Make sure its specified somewhere in your contract that agreed upon songs must be played or not played accordingly so that you know he'll play what you want.

Yes it's very wise to have a "play" list.. We had a DJ nice enough guy and a friend of the family.. He does professional weddings and functions.. HOWEVER, he came over and gave us a really great price 1/2 his normal fee which was what we were looking for- since we were on a tight budget.. We gave him a list and were very, very specific to the type of music we wanted at OUR wedding that WE paid for... We signed a contract and picked our songs.. Sadly, our wedding turned into a 50's sock hop... We were very disappointed in the music selection that our DJ decided to play.. If he wasn't a family friend we wouldn't have paid him.. It was that bad... We would've been better off had we burned our own "Wedding Mix" cd and had him play the songs from our own cd collection... We even went as far as to give him CD's to play from our car.... So, buyer beware.. .Get a contract and be very very specific on the songs/type of music you want played.. Tell the DJ upfront that if he does not follow the basic instructions that he may not get paid the full negotiated price... Good luck

We requested several meetings with our DJ to make sure what was played was what we wanted. If you don't think he will have the songs, ask him if he does or if not can he get them? If the answer to both is no, then burn him some CDs. If you are having an issue about not getting what you want played from him you may have to choose a different DJ. That being said, most of them have access to most any song. good luck

Oh, absolutely! I have been doing the same thing myself. Most DJ's actually appreciate some direction in what type of music to play as well.
It's your day and it needs to make you as happy as possible. If you want to hear some "Luck Be a Lady" and you're stuck with some "Whoomp There It Is" (two randomly chosen songs), you might be a bit bummed.
No worries! Get that list together and have the best time ever!!!! Good luck with everything! And congratulations!

Oh yes ... I would be surprised if you didn't have a list for your DJ. It is always good to give them a little direction to keep the party going. They probably won't play them in any certain order, but will play the songs you ask for. Also make sure that you give them songs that you definitely DO NOT want played (like the macarena or the chicken dance) to keep them on track.

The only song that I had to play was my wedding song, my DJ just played a good variety and requests from the guests.

yes, very normal... I did the same thing!
My dad's a DJ and he has a sheet to fill out for all the different dances (bride& groom, bride & dad, wedding party, cake, etc...) he also asks what other song you want played or do not want played so he can get them ready before the day of the wedding.
Congrats!!!

Give the list, but let him decide when to play what. A professional knows to keep it clean and has many song ideas you may not think of. They'll also be able to kick up the energy a bit at the right time with the right song.
BTW...Congrats

Most good DJs will give you a planning sheet to fill out asking what songs you'd like to have played for your first dance, cake cutting, entrance, etc. They'll also ask for your "do not play" list and for any songs that you definitely want played.
