YES it does work but it's not nearly efficient enough to run an engine just with an on board electrolyzer. Since you have to use the engine to make electricity to split the water, your engine will never make enough electricity to make enough hydrogen to run itself.

Now, you can use a mixture of gas and hydrogen to boost mileage. But that takes all kinds of engine modifications. Just don't waste your money and buy into all those hydrogen boosters units. It's better if you just wait around let other people prove it works with-out a doubt before spending money.

There is a newish chemical hydrogen generator being worked on. It uses no electricity so it shows some promise. Check out the project here.

I have a 4 hour video of a car that runs on hydrogen stored in tanks. It runs great. Only problem is the storage tanks are huge, cost $10k and it's really expensive to have the tanks filled.

I'm building an electric car tho, and hope to make my own batteries. Electric is the way to go if you didn't have to spend $20k on batteries or Fuel Cells.

There are processes that are still under development that work. They involve using aluminum with sodium hydroxide to cause hydrogen to be given off (and even using coated aluminum with plain water). The problem is that to make them practical you need a way of refueling easily and you need a control system that keeps the gassing at a controlled appropriate rate.

The problem is not in the science - it is in the engineering.

Currently, hydrogen can only be generated by costly processes, such as electrosis (the splitting of water molecules using electricity). So a hydrogen generator is actually too inefficient to work
