The two witnesses are an allegory pointing to the institutional church (wheat & tares) of the new testament. God often uses the number 2 to signify the going forth of the gospel in parabolic language, we see this in Luke 10 when the disciples were sent out in 2's, amnong other places. Now carefully compare:
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth." - Revelation 11:3,4.
The two witnesses are called "candlesticks" the same word John in Revelation had earlier used to describe the churches:
"The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches." - Revelation 1:20.
"Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;" - Revelation 2:1.

The two witnesses come before Christ returns, when the Antichrist is here professing to be God, and the mass majority of the World believes the fake is Christ. The two witnesses will witness against the fake, and they will be Gods Children's allies (Gods elect, meaning only those who know he's a fake as well, which will be a very small percentage)
When the two witnesses are then murdered in Jerusalem, you can set your watch, because in exactly 3 1/2 days, they stand up onto their feet and Christ returns.
You need to study up on Chronology of events.

The two witnesses will be a man and a woman. The Son of Man, predicted for the end times, and his Bride. These are the ones who stand before the Lord. Together they will convict the world of it's sins. They play a major part in the final Judgement of the Christian church.
They equate with the last ghostly pale horse with the two riders of the apocalypse. This will conclude the history of the Christian church. The true gospel will be proclaimed.

Where 2 or more are gathered in my name.....witness of the final judgment, of the fair and just rewards for the kingdom..
we are told of how he will come and with who so that we are not deceived by the many false who will come.....

Deu 19:15 ¶ One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
Deu 19:16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him [that which is] wrong;

the two witnesses come in the tribulations, not judgement day. Do you ever ask a question that makes sense?

The Bible has been changed tremendously by those who interpreted it. This may be a wrong statement. Besides if I am remembering my Bible correctly, it is Christ who makes these decisions. Beside this, who can know the mind of God?

One witness is OK, but two can collaborate each other's testimony. It's strange that God would would about proof in the end, but totally disregard it throughout the rest of history.
