Preferably on with a decent free trial. I'm not spending €800 without sampling the software first, but I can't find a decent trial of any software. Anybody got any tips?

what do you mean by "music production software?"
do you want loop-based software to make electronica?
or do you REALLY want to produce REAL audio and record?

if you want looping and you want to go cheap, get FL Studio6 by ImageLine software. it's a pretty powerful program (PC only) for what you pay. you can really do alot with it.

if you want to get into more REAL audio and recording (the skillful stuff....hahahaa), you'll need to get an interface that will change audio into a digital form. i'd suggest (bang for the buck, here) the PreSonus Firebox with 2 mic preamps in it. you just plug your mic in, set the level, and you're off. the good thing is, it comes with a decent and easy-to-use recording software for a beginner. (Cubase LE)

what alot of rappers and dance peeps do is they get BOTH a loop program (which runs NICELY through the PreSonus Inspire...or something) and the recording program (in your case, Cubase LE). they do the loops in the one and record vocals and any other REAL instruments over the loops in Cubase. (you simply import the loop into a cubase track.....really easy to do...drag and drop) They mix it in Cubase and bump it out to a wav. file and become all sortsa famous! lol.

good luck. (in total, i got you under 500 dollars american here........<300 or so for the interface and cubase, <200 for the loop program)

If you have a Midi Keyboard:
Reason or Cubase

Reason: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/
Cubase: http://www.steinberg.net/983+M52087573ab0.html
Both are available as trials

If you don't:
FL Studio 7
http://www.flstudio.com/
Trial available

If you are inexprerienced with music production software, I'd reccomend you download FL Studio trial because you can use a midi keyboard but it's not required, and it has a user friendly interface.
