It is a Software for easy playback of Divx files, which are compressed using the Divx codec. It is their own software..there are other s/w too which can play them like winamp (codecs needed) and also unversal player like VLC or media player classic.

Divx Is The Format Of Some Video MOves. Just Inistal That. When You Inistal DIVX Your Multimedia Players Can Support The Format Of Divx And Show You Film Of That Format. It's Also Has a Good Resolution And Get More HardDIsk. So It's Good To Captures And ...

Divx is for video as similar to mp3 for audio.
The DivX codec uses lossy MPEG-4 Part 2 compression, also known as MPEG-4 ASP, where quality is balanced against file size for utility. It is one of several codecs commonly associated with ripping, where audio and video multimedia are transferred to a hard disk and transcoded.
Divx player uses the codec to play all the dvd movies.

A short explination,
Everyone wants to be the better mouse trap, This is the reason there are so many different Video Formats and the same reason for all the different, Video Players everyone is trying to be the Industry Standard.
Players.
Quicktime,
RealPlayer,
Macromedia.
Windows Media Player
and on and on,
So you see in many instances if you go to a web site and you can't see there video, chances are you don't have there media player to view it.
I agree what a joke, there is a partial soulution by downloading VLC Player it will play just about anything in any Format.
