Why have street lights on roads and roundabouts? You see there are these things called Headlights they often come in pairs and are on all vehicles, they light up the way for us and there are these things called reflectors which also assist when the the headlights hit these they bounce back and create even more light.
Then we could all watch the activities of the beautiful night sky and SAVE ENERGY, NUCLEAR WASTE and MONEY.
The street light Manufacturers could get more useful jobs instead such as, the Production of Solar Lanterns which aren't as bright but would be more harmonic and still guide the drunk drivers and people who don't look at the roads whist driving.
And limit the amount of offensive Christmas lights!

I know there are some potential loonies out there but most of them run your Country.
I think you may have early signs of Paranoid Schizophrenia yourselves.
PULL YOURSELVES TOGETHER GIRLS, you fantasize too much! Why not take along a grown up adult with you everywhere you go.
Better still don't go out on the street at all, then we can all enjoy the meteor showers. And when we see the NEO coming we won't bother letting you know.

Light pollution at night is a very serious issue with astronomers, especially of the backyard variety. I being one of them totally agree with what you're saying. The night sky is truly a wonder, but the other 99% of the suburban and urban denizens probably don't even look up at the night sky anymore and couldn't care less. Pity.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of road feature that headlights just don't pick up on. In lots of cases, removing traffic lights will increase road mortality.
That being said, there are a lot of very inefficient street lights out there - lights that send light UP as well as down. This increases the ambient light and yes, makes it harder to see stars (and costs money, etc.)
Of course, you can imagine with sophisticated enough HUDs (Heads-up-displays) the ability to get rid of not only street lights, but head lights!
None-of-the-above helps the pedestrian, however.

Why don't we just go the whole hog and all put up black-out blinds while we're at it?
I'm sure you're aware that the incidence of accidents during the black-out sky-rocketed?
There are no streetlights on the motorway nearest to me - the 60-mile stretch of M62 between Leeds and Hull. It's so dangerous, and so frightening to be driving along there after dark. Let me tell you - headlights just don't cut it.
And incidentally, there is no improvement in the number of stars you can see in the sky along that stretch of road.

I think street lights are necessary to guide traffic at night, and to prevent potential crime. If you want to go back to nature, I'd suggest you find a deserted beach where you can stroll along the banks in perfect harmony with lunar and starry light that won't jar your perception of Mother Nature's perfection.

wow ... where do you live? ... ever heard of anyone having their car break-down (or having and accident) and having to walk to a gas station at midnight?
what about muggings, and rapes, and murders???
you fix the bad side of human nature and make it so we can see if the dark if we aren't in cars with headlights ... so the lights aren't needed for safety ... and I will personally take down every light so you can look at the stars ....

It is not necessary to remove all streetlights to reduce light pollution. Full cutoff fixtures direct light at the ground and prevent glare that can blind drivers. See the source for more information.
