It has been the man first then the wife

I think it is better and safer not to use names at all, most people say the telephone number, a statement to the effect that they are unavailable right now, and a statement about leaving a name and phone number.
I think giving a name gives the bad guys out there way too much info that can be used against you, and the kids.
If your husband must take business calls at home, perhaps a compromise of putting the message in his voice would help, and if you must, use his first name. But I would never put kid's or your first name on it, use a last name as a last resort.

Well, in this day and age, there is no man-wife-kids hierarchy that is customary really. To tell you the truth, I think the etiquette is "Hello, you've reached the Smith residence. Please leave your name, number and a brief message after the tone." Or, alternatively, I like to leave the, "Hello, you have reached 212.555.1234. Please leave a message at the tone, and I will call you back."

Thankfully, the era of cutesy and witty phone messages is long over, and anyone with the "kids leaving the incoherent phone message" or the silly jingles or gag messages is just a fool. Just a basic indicator that a message can be left, and then leave the message. Done.

Unfortunately, we are in the era of ridiculous ring tones, and the mother of all phone nonsense..... the technology that allows you to pick a song to play for those that are calling you and make them listen to it while they wait for you or voicemail to pick up. That is awful.

We use "you've reached the (last name)" rather than going through a scroll of names. People who call know who they want to address their message to and will say so. Some messages get so lengthy or cutesy, it makes you wish for a skip button.

Our's says:

Hi you've reached John and Jane Doe, please leave a message after the beep.

Many ways of leaving a message, but usually the man does come first, just like addressing an envelope!

I usually just say this is the (lastname)'s residence.....

But when i was living with my parents me and my 2 sisters did a message together and was cute and funny.

I think most home messages should be fun & personal cause you mostly have friends and family calling. Unless you use your home phone for business purposes.

It might be fun to have your kids do the message for you, if their at "speaking" age.

I don't leave a name on my outgoing message because it gives telemarketers and other undesirables my name. My message says:

You have reached (phone number). We're unable to answer the phone at this time. Please leave your name, phone number, and a brief message and we'll return your call as soon as possible.

Hi you've reached the *Smith* residence. We are unavailable to take your call at this time, so please leave your name, number and a brief message and we'll get back to you.

:)

Have answering service state they have reached the_______ residence, and to state who their message is directed to at the beginning.
