This is called an arythmia. It is where your heart beats abnormally. You should run about 75 to 80 beats per minute (bpm). The most common condition is called tachycardia. This means that your heart is beating to fast. There is such a thing a bradycardia, where you heart beats to slow. Tachycardia can easily lead into heart attack, stroke, and other life threatning complications. If this ever happens to you, go to the ER right away. DO NOT DRIVE. You will likely faint. Call 911. Tell them that you need an ambulence because you belive you are having an aythmia. This condition and others as well are serious.

That 70% value is used for your long slow distance runs, 1 to 2 hours. or your rest days up to an hour, between your more intense workouts that you do 3 times a week. Interval training, faster shorter runs 30 minutes or so at 80% to 90% of MHR. The posted link and many others give more detail as to how to train. A foot fall rate of 150 is probably the slowest for running.

I also have this problem. I was prescribed Atenolol. This medication will cause your heart rate to slow down. If he is overweight, this may be the problem as your heart has to work harder and pump faster. He should see is doctor right away. The doctor can run some test to pin point the cause.

180 beats is too fast it should be only about 75 beats. A doctor is a must and something must be done quickly!

There are a lot of different possibilities. He could have hypothyroidism. However, this is a serious (but treatable) problem. He needs to see a doctor.
