I have my directv connected to my Onkyo receiver via HDMI and out to my TV via HDMI. I tried pluging my xbox into the auxillary port on the front of the receiver. The audio worked but no video...any reason why?

which onkyo?
You need to provide a model number to be sure, if it is capable of video upconversion ( not all are) it is a settings issue and you need to consult your owners manual, or provide a model number to those here to walk you thru it.

I doubt that your Onkyo has the ability to grab the video from your XBOX cable and then pump it out the HDMI. You will need to run, probably, component from the receiver to the TV.
OR-
XBOX video straight to tV
XBOX audio stright to receiver.
