If a person has never had sex (vaginal, oral, or anal) and has never had any sexual contact with someone who has the virus then chances of them having genital herpes themselves is pretty slim to none.

Genital herpes is almost always spread by sex or sexual contact. It can be spread through childbirth, but this is VERY rare. Take care!

To the previous answerer, you cannot have genital herpes on your shoulder! It is called genital herpes because it is on your GENITALS and if it is not on your genitals it is not genital herpes. What you actually have is herpes gladiatorum. It is often caught by wrestlers. You probably came into contact either with someone else with herpes on their body (herpes gladiatorum) or most likely with someone who had a cold sore on their mouth (oral herpes, which infects 80% of the population).

In answer to the original question:
Rarely, people can auto innoculate form their own oral herpes infeciton, i.e. they have a cold sore on their mouth, they touch their mouth, they touch their genitals, and BOOM they develop genital herpes of the same type they have on their mouth, usually type 1. It is rare because having it in one location gives you a high level of immunity against another attack by the same virus in a different location, but it can and does happen.

You can also get genital herpes if you are a virgin, by receiving oral sex form a partner infected with oral herpes (cold sores) even if they do not have a visible cold sore at the time.

It all depends on what you mean by "Sex." The important thing is that herpes is spread by skin to skin contact.

So, for example, if someone with oral herpes pressed his or her mouth to your genitals, you could get genital herpes.

Or if someone with genital herpes pressed their genitals against yours (even if there was no penetration or intercourse), you could get genital herpes.

It's very uncommon for anyone to give themselves genital herpes by already having oral herpes, but the two varieties can be passed back and forth between partners. It's important to remember that 70-80% of people have oral herpes (cold sores), so even if you're "just" having oral sex, you may still want to use a condom or dental dam.

Hope that helps!

you can still get it from oral or if you 'touch' the infected person in that area, you can also get it.

if you touch any area of another person with an outbreak of it, then you will get it.
