I would get a blood test to start with. Ask for them to do a blood sugar test also. They poke the finger and test a small drop of blood. That's what people use to check there blood sugar level that are diabetic. The weight loose is a factor. There may be something happening that is sexual, or bully's at school, or something that he seen and cant tell you. But you sure need to find out. Its a tough one to approach at a young age but maybe playing a game with him then mentioning somethings that happened to you when you went to school that just ate you up ( or make something up) the point is to loosin him up to tell you. Not bully it out of him if you know what I mean. If its not school is there a new sitter? a new relative in his life that maybe the cause like being spanked or hit. Sent up hidden video camera and watch to make sure nothing like that is going on. I am not saying this to scare you there are many possibilities either or and are no picnic to figure out weather it is sickness or emotional. I don't know if you are a tough parent or one he can come to for anything. I am just giving suggestions.
The other thing is a mineral or vitamin deficiency. You have to tell them when they take a blood test to check for these things. Iron and B12 deficiency. Some people have a body type that will not store vital minerals and vitamins. Most are a easy fix though but can be tough to figure out if you dont have them check for certain ones. He could even have a bug in his tummy. Dont take no for a anwser form the doctor. You need to tell them you know something is wrong and what them to help you search it out if it is medical. If your doctor tells you that its nothing go to a different doctor then. You know your kid better then anyone so dont let them make you second guess yourself. Hope this helps and good luck!

Well, it's hard to say based only on the description you're giving, I can't really say a lot from here, but I would doubt that your son has ketosis and acetone breath (which is the fruity odor that the breath of diabetics sometimes have, generally just before they lapse into a diabetic coma) because sugar levels generally have to be very high (over 500 at least) to cause that. If you're worried though, talk to your pediatrician, they can do a simple test to see if he's excreting sugar into his urine, which is only seen in diabetics.

Make sure he is brushing his teeth well, stand with him and see how he's doing it. Many kids will over-eat or stress eat. Make sure he's getting a good amount of exercise after school. No kid wants to sit and work and learn new stuff necessarily; you must parent him and coach him and prod him and work with him until he learns what he must do to get through school successfully.
If you think he may be diabetic make an appointment with the pediatrician and have his blood sugar checked (fasting blood sugar is best). Make sure when you call for the appointment that they do this thing there and not at a lab somewhere else.
He does not sound diabetic to me but you must take action if you even suspect it to put these fears at rest.

Is he thirsty and peeing a lot? Those are classic symptoms of diabetes, along with the weight loss and "fruity" breath. Get him to a doctor quickly...mine developed in only 2 weeks and then I went unconscious. Good luck.
