i was wonder how long ago it became unacceptable or illegal to smoke in hospital waiting rooms. i'm looking for first- or second-hand accounts here, i.e. "my grandma told me she saw people smoking in a hospital waiting room in hartford, cn in 1953" so no speculation please, unless it's impeccably sourced. thanks!

I began my career in nursing in 1983, and at that time there were smoker's lounges available in hospitals. In 1986, the hospital I worked for banned smoking.

Hospitols more recently became Non Smoking facilities....some have even made it where people cannot smoke outside the hospitols anymore either.
Back in the 50's cigarettes and cigars where not considered harmful.....the public did not know they were harmful and definately did not know that second hand smoke caused harm to others. Alot has changed since then and America is working on becoming a smoke free enviornment.
Now we don't kill our children with cigarette smoke we just dope them up on medication...they lost a lot of money when they let people know that smoking causes cancer, so America decided everyone has a mental disorder instead...and making big bucks because of it.

As for the waiting room, it was recently if that helps. However, I was at a hospital waiting room here in California and their was a nice smoking shelter not from the waiting room which was handicapped excessible. A cancer patient in a wheelchair was smoking a medical joint.

You don't really think smoking began with you modern day wonders do you. I remember going with my dad to see a new sister and my ma smoking in the room while she was feeding her baby, my sister and that was back before the fifties.
My neurologist bummed cigeretts off me in the hospital while he examined in the mid fifties.
