My 12 year old poodle was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He takes two insulin shots per day and is doing pretty good. However, he has now developed a terrible problem with his feet. They are red, swollen, and in some areas even look kind of infected looking. Could this be related to the diabetic condition?

Well, I can't say for sure, but it could be, diabetes can make infections more likely as well as reducing the feeling to the distal extremities, making it more likely for them to get injured.

First of all you can go to a drugstore and get one of those bracelets that say you are a diabetic so that that God forbid, if anything happens, at least people would know what was wrong. As a fellow diabetic, I can say that as long as you take care of yourself, travel is ok. I always keep a candy bar or something in my purse for that just in case situation. So that is always a good idea. Always keep extra pills on you at all times also. Taking even a half a pill if you feel your sugar getting high can help. As for time changes, I change my medication to suit the time changes. If you take your medicine, 30 minutes before dinner or whatever, you have to change with the time zone. Just know that if you relax about it, your body will too. the first thing that gets my sugar out of whack is stress. So calm down. The second thing that gets my sugar out of whack is cheesecake! LOL

Yes, you need to get back to the vet as soon as possible, before that foot gets more infected.

Do you check your poodles blood sugar? Or do you just give him shots? This is a serious question.
