I've been trying to make grilled tofu but I can't seem to marinate the tofu enough--the sauce lightly coats the outside, but the inside is just bland. Does anyone have any ideas on how to marinade tofu, what sauces to use, how long to, and how to prepare tofu? I like extra firm tofu if that helps. Thanks!

Are you trying to marinate an entire block? Try cutting your tofu into smaller slabs, about a half-inch thick. What about poking holes part-way through the tofu to allow the sauce to seep in. Are you letting your tofu marinate overnight in the fridge?

First, use firm instead of extra firm. Open it up and squeeze the water out by putting paper towel around it and putting something heavy on it, and leaving it to sit for about 15 minutes. Then wrap it up and freeze it. Thaw it and the consistency will have changed, it will be much more porous and absorb sauce better.

But I have to say that although tofu will absorb sauce somewhat, you will have to get used to the taste of it plain in the middle. The more you eat it, the more you will get accustomed to it and you'll like it. People say it doesn't have it's own taste and it takes on the flavour of what you cook it with, but that's not completely true.

If you are grilling, cut the tofu into strips and baste the sauce on it. The grill will fuse the sauce to the tofu and create a crisp, delicious coating on the tofu. Enjoy!

I just made kabobs last night and I marinated the tofu in
soy sauce
sugar
cornstarch
onion and garlic powder.
It was hella good. Oh, and liquid smoke. You might want to add some water instead of all soy sauce. I was just winging it, but it worked out great. Add enough corn starch to make the sauce thick and stick to the tofu.

Slice the tofu & press it between 2 plates w/ paper towel for 15-30 minutes. Then marinate it in a Ziploc bag overnight.

if you have to use tofu, then use the firm tofu, and boil it in hot water, for 3-5 mins, then take it out, let it cool off and pat with towel to get it to dry up and place in the freezer, wait 12 hrs, then you can grill your tofu, i don't know when you get to marinate it though....i'm no good at this

or you can use baked tofu it's easier
it's firm and i mean hard, it won't crumple apart when you touch it, you can marinate it and grill baked tofu.

I don't think the taste goes all the way to the inside. If you want a good flavoured tofu, make a sauce for it.
