Have a theme? Like what is his favorite color, Pro team, or activity....Also, make sure you play music from his younger days. Your local dollar store has many little items to decorate on a budget (balloons, candles, table cloths, napkins, paper plates, party favors, etc) Put pictures out of your Grandpa when he was young and when he got married, had his grand kids and stuff like that. As far as food goes, what is his favorite? For a BBQ--Chicken, Tri-tip, Hot dogs, Hamburgers are good. As for side dishes: Chips, Salsa, Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, Dips, Pasta Salads, Rice, French Bread, Beans, etc. Also a great idea is to buy a little notebook and have everyone in attendance write a little something to him, could be a favorite memory, something he did for them, or just how much he means to them. This he can read after the party and it will be cherished by him!
Have fun and hope your party is a Smash!! :-)

First, make a list of what you need for food, and schedule what needs to be done at what times. Like if there's anything you can make ahead and what needs to be done last. Get some friends to help out going to get decorations while you cook or set up. The list really helps to keep you organized. Like "Put brisket in by 9, make potato packets at 10, ice a bucket at 1, a caterer will be here at 3, set up tables at 2." etc. It feels really good to be able to cross things off the list.

And get all the plates and serving bowls AND utensils ready early so you don't scramble at the last minute. By the time it's ready for serving people just can dish up! And hopefully you have an hour of down time to relax before the bash.

Napkins, silverware/plasticware, serving spoons, cups, ice. A crockpot to keep some food warm. A pan to fill with ice to set dishes that need to stay cold in. Plenty of buns to go with the hotdogs and hamburgers. Pickles. Garbage bags. Perhaps games such as cornhole, bocci ball, horseshoes, frisbee. Sunblock could also be a good idea.

Have fun!

A theme is always nice, then things fall into place better.
A theme will help you decide the type food and decorations, etc.
i.e. If you go Hawaiian, you can add a watermelon fruit dish and pineapple to a shish kabob or something along those lines, tiki torches etc..

1950's costume party Think "Happy Days". Watch old reruns for ideas. Besides burgers, fries and shakes, meatloaf and mashed potatoes was big. Blow up pictures of 33's and 45's and remember ponytails, poodle skirts, oxford cloths button down shirts, black motorcycle jackets, convertibles American Graffiti.

Condiments (but keep it simple, unless you know that everybody likes different stuff); two coolers (or even three) for water, beer/wine, and sodas; if people are bringing their kids, hire some babysitters to keep them entertained so their parents can have more fun (ratio 1 sitter to every 4-5 kids); whatever your ganddad's favorite things are for the grille, dessert, to drink etc.
Remember to havea good time yourself and gets LOTS of pictures! Good luck

Trash cans with lids to help minimize the flies. Also, have enough ice, cups, and other paper products. Plenty of chairs and tables set up.

you have not provided enough information....are you cooking indoors or outdoors? if outdoors, do you have a bbq pit or smoker, and if so, how big are they? most importantly, what are graddads favorite types of food?
