the only symptom she has is a chronic cough and once in awhile she has like spit coming back up her throat, by the way she is 72 years old and may have Mackulur degenerate, still going for tests about that, I thought I would add that in, because when she coughs her eyes turn really really red and water like she has been crying. She does not have heart burn, her throat does bother her only when she coughs. She had an upper GI,chest xray so far and thats what they come up with, we think you have acid reflux. She probably coughs every half hour or so then she has to have a drink of water and something to suck on like some candy or cough drop because she can't get her breath if she does not. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

I assume you mother is not a smoker. Unless reflux was observed on fluoroscopy during the upper GI, the radiologist can only give a statistical opinion that reflux exists. However, a cough as you describe is certainly suggestive of reflux. You might consider having your mother treated for this, and if no improvement in, say, two weeks, have her return to her doctor or to a chest specialist for further evaluation.

My mom has the exact same symptoms for years and it is acid reflux - she has to watch watch she eats - no chocolate, caffeine, tomato's. She also cannot eat anything after 5 p.m. She has such bad attacks that she wakes up with a severe fever for days.

It may possibly be sinus drainage. Have them check her for allergies or sinus infection.
