I said paint cabinets because I do not want to strip them and these cabinets are real oak and I don't want to see the grain.

I don't know about painting them... Are they painted now or are they the natural oak color? If they are just stained then you could see about restaining them a darker color. Good luck.

It is certainly possible to get the color to match another wood either by sanding completely and refinishing with appropriate stain and urethane or if your existing finish is clear you may be able to get away with just scuffing and applying a stain/urethane combined product ( i.e. Polyshades). The problem you are going to have is oak has a very distinctive grain and is more "open" than either cherry or walnut. Anyone that knows wood will pick up the ruse right away.

Make sure your cabinets are framed cabinets with wood doors and sides. If they are particle board with a vinyl picture of wood on them you won't be able to stain them or paint them. If they are wood then like everyone else said you will have to strip them down, stain them the color you want, then top coat.

If your cabinets are solid oak then you wouldn't paint them. They need to be sanded and re-stained the color of your choice. Check with your local hardware store to get you set up with the proper products.

You would want to stain them, not paint them. In order to do this, you will have to strip them down to bare wood. It's a very labor intensive job, but in my experiance...very rewarding. Check with your local DIY store for more details or go here.

Remember, these are instructions for UNFINISHED cabinets, which means you need to strip any paint or polyeurathane coating off of your cabinets.

Best of luck!
