Try to keep a theme going - like do all white and clear glass, or pick one other color, using silver as accents. Use charger plates under your regular plates..dresses them up...they come in silver, gold or colors, and you can get them pretty cheaply almost anywhere now. Add some candles, but don't have them scented (takes away from the food) and don't have them too high if they will be sitting in between people...same with flowers or centerpieces - you want to make sure that everyone can see over them. If you have a beautiful table, a tablecloth isn't necessary, but use cloth napkins along with napkin rings (or fold them, or fan out into water goblets). Keep the lights low enough to not be blinding but not so low that you can't see your food. Have an ice bucket if chilling wine or champangne. Use your best water goblets and wine glasses.Lemon twists in the water goblets is nice and simple, too...I hope this all helps!

It all starts out with your menu .The number of courses and the food that each course will consist of will determine what plates silverware and glassware you will use
The next thing to consider is the degree of formality .The more formal you get the more crowded your table will become
Basic formal 3 course meal
will consist of:
charger plate
staring left & going clockwise
2 forks
individual butter dish w/ molded pats -no foil
bread plate w/ butter knife
dessert silverware knife & fork or spoon & fork
white wine glass
red wine glass
water glass
coffee cup & sauc
teaspoon
2 knives
Also on that table are candles , a center piece ,individual napkins -not place in glasses
There should be one or better yet two table cloths on the table
Bare tables are a no no

start out with a table cloth, usually a simple color (brown? red etc...)
place flowers or a pretty center piece in the middle
next, have a either lace, or sometype of place mats then you can put another place mat on top (smaller, diff pattern)
it looks nice with a platter, or larger plate thats wood or metal (nice one) then place the plate on top
have napkins in napkin holders, with nice silverware on the sides
you can have candels as well!

anything that you think matches, elegantly, will work great!!!

good luck

This site will give you diagrams on how to set the proper table. Add your centerpiece. making sure it is no higher then your elbow with a folded fist,on the table ( usually about a little over 12 inches ). Your guests must be able to see over the centerpiece, of it must be elevated out of vision.
