I work at a clothing store and we use plastic bags. Why can't they start making paper ones like the ones they have at American Eagle and Guess, for example? How can I address this issue to the people in charge of making these types of decisions???

A couple things.
1. Storage..plastic is more compact than paper.
2. cost...plastic is cheaper than paper.
Once you can get around that you may be able to convince them.

If you could isolate the cost per bag..paper and plastic...then some ideas may come into mind..like a punch card for people who bring their own bags and after it's filled they get 10% off their next purchase....this could increase sales and save money on bags.

Try putting a plastic bag over their heads! J.K. Why not ask them about it? Ask them why they do not use paper products like the other stores you mentioned?
Honestly, cloth bags are made from the environment too. All 3 products can be reused. When the cloth bag gets worn out, it still gets tossed to the trash and wouldn't decompose as fast or burn as clean as most paper bags would.

Honestly, paper bags are no better to use. You should try selling cloth bags and getting people to use those. See paper bags cut down trees, and though they can be made out of recycled paper they take 4x the energy to make. It is probably a cost issue- but it is fairly cheap to by cloth bags in bulk, you could sell those with the store lable on them. Also to get people to really use them, you could have a deal where if you spend over $___.__ you get one for free.

I am sure it is a matter of cost. The paper bags may cost on average 5 to 10 cents more. In terms of a year that is allot of money just to switch to a different bag!

The plastic ones are a LOT cheaper in bulk. It's probably a bottom-line thing.

Do a cost effectiveness study, and if the results are favorable, bring it to their attention. You might even get some recognition if you save them money.
