If a Muslim swears in the name of Allah that he/she would do this, and then didn't, I know this is considered a sin. But what can you do to recompense? I know it's fasting but what kind of fasting and how many days?
Example: A person swore by the name of Allah that he would never marry because he was so full with grief. But after the years, he found an attractive, kind and polite girl. What should he do? He had already swore never to marry yet he wants to marry this person.
Help me, dear Muslims.

*guys, the example above was just an example. I am still a teenager, and what I'm having problem about is swearing in the name of Allah about something else. Sorry for the confusion.

"(Allah will not punish you for what is uninentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masakin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allah make clear to you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful.)" Al-Ma'idah verse 89
i am afraid Allah didn't let u choose between feeding & fasting. this is conditioned that u CANNOT AFFORD. this is a common mistake taken by many muslims. feeding is not necessarily very fine food; but could b simple enough about approximately 7 US $ for the whole of the ten wallah a'lam. of course, u will have great Thawab from allah for this giving. (just read the explanation of the mentioned verse from any trusted source; if u have any doubt or something unclear)
god bless u
peace

Swearing is done to affirm some statement. Islam has asked to swear on some very serious occasions.
Swearing in general is considered a sin as Quran tells do believe the swearing ones. It is for those people who swear without any reason or sence just for minor benefits.
There is common arab swearing which not good but is not taken as a swear, they say Wallah.
If u tie up some swear then u have to follow but swear is not an obligation where it is a sin or against islam. For example when some of relative of Abu Baker misbehaved with prophet pbuh he swore that I will never help them. Prophet of Allah forbade him for this thing.
You can marry that girl without any problem just pay fidyad as mentioned in Quran for swearing.

Allah is most understanding, so he will understand ur situation, aslong as u r marrying someone that can bring u closer to him. Ask for forgiveness and fast, then u should be good. Also try not to swear in the name of Allah, especially when its about a future event(cos u never know what can happen)

I believe is to fast 3 days with the niyyah or intention that it is a kaffarah or recompensation fast. So long as you wake up for sahur for the 3 days its not necessary to verbalize it, but I believe this should be a wajib fast not sunnah wallahu a'lam.
If you understand Indonesian, you can visit www.majelisrasulullah.com hosted by Al-Habib Mundzir Al-Musawwa student of Al-Habib Umar bin Hafizh of Dar al-Mustafa, Tarim, Hadhramaut he'll give you a very informed answer. O'wise you can also check with www.islamicsupremecouncil.org under the leadership of Syaikh Hisyam Kabbani you can e-mail them too.
One should not make it a habit to swear in the name of Allah, especially in matters like this regarding marriage, where marriage is a meritorious act Rasulullah has said an-nikah or the solemnisation of Islamic marriage is his sunnah or way, and whomever doesn't do it (ie is against it) is not among him. And Allah knows Best

Assalam alaykom warahmat Allah,
Let me answer your question in three main points;
1) Our beloved prophet Muhamed, peace be upon him, told us not to swear in the name of Allah so much, swearing should be used when needed only, and swearing about something in the future is not appropriate as you don't know if you will be able to do so or not.
2) A Muslim should not swear to do something haram/illegal smply because swearing means intending to do and intending to do something haram is also haram. And intending not to marry is not from mohamedian Sunnah.

It is not sinful to change your mind in this but there is something due on you. Either free a Muslim slave, feed 10 poor Muslims, or buy clothes for each. If unable to do any of those, then fast 3 days.

I'm not a Muslim, nor am I religious, period. But I believe
I can help you out, here. It's wrong to lie--regardless of
whether or not you believe in a god. (It is immoral, and
therefore a "sin.")
But just as it's wrong to hold a grudge--not to forgive,
so too is it "ungodly" not to accept the repentance of a
person who person who lied to Allah; or the Lord Jesus
Christ; or Yahweh.
I hope that helps.
Peace.

Remember that Allah is the Most Merciful. I believe that Allah knows your heart, and if you are truly repentant that you made that promise out of emotion, then surely Allah forgives.
Marriage completes half our deen. The Qur'an states that man and woman are made for each other.
Why don't you make istakhara about your relationship, asking Allah to bless it if it is right for the both of you and for your religion?
