I'm 28 and I have diabetes type 2. I know I'm supposed to watch my toes and keep care of them. Well last Wednesday night, I was closing a door and it ran over my big toe. There was lots of blood but when I cleaned it and looked at it, it just seemed to have ripped part of the nail off.

I've been cleaning it and I left it uncovered (I was home for a few days, so I didn't have to worry about dirt or anything). Well today I went to clean it and it looked like there was some dried blood around the cuticle. I wiped it off and it appears that it may been a scab. Underneath it was clear, very foul smelling liquid.

My question is: if it was anywhere else, I'd put some antibacterial lotion on it and cover it with a band-aid and wait. But since it's my toe and I have diabetes, should I check I go to the doctor? Or just put the lotion on it and give it a day or two?

I would just keep it cleaned with soap and water, but don't soak it. I would also use a triple-antibiotic ointment and use a sterile non stick pad (first aid area of store) and wrap it in gauze. Do the cleaning and rewrapping with ointment 2x a day.
You should worry if it's starts getting infected... red, puffy, hot to the touch, painful, white pus oozing from it. But if you are cleaning it regularly and keeping it wrapped, then the chances are it won't get infected.
If you just aren't sure or are worried, then definitely see a doctor. It may be nothing, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

In the future I would make sure you are at least wearing socks around the house, too many things can get your foot infected, no matter how clean you keep your house.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Diabetics take a longer time to "heal" wounds (circulation problems, etc). What you need to look for are signs of infection: warmth, redness, smell( foul odor), drainage. Wash your toe with soap and water (still the best germ cleaner) apply triple antibiotic ointment , leave your toe uncovered and prop your foot up. You should make a habit of always wearing shoes - or some sort of protective covering for your feet.

I would just keep it clean. Soak it in salt water - a great way to cleanse a cut.

You could also put some polysporin cream on it to help with the healing.

Leaving it uncovered is a great idea unless there is a possibility that it can catch on something else.

If you were a type 1 diabetic I would suggest you go to the doctor but you should be able to keep it clean enough for it to heal on its own.

If it starts to become inflamed and/or throb then you should get it checked out.

I would first soak in the bathtub and then put some hydrogen peroxide on it. Use a cotton ball and it will clean your toe. The tiny bubbles will let you know it is cleaning your wound. My kids like the bubble part and don't mind having their wounds cleaned out. That should be a start. Do not wear a sock awhile you are home. Leave it open to get some air. I would get in to see the doctor tight away.

Hi Friend
You clean the cut on ur toe and leave it open that's not the problem. You should have taken some antibiotic tablets to get the cut healed.

You could possibly have an infection beginning. It doesn't matter with being diabetic on where your cut is--it's always something to worry about because you heal slower.
Clean it with some peroxide and alcohol and let it air when you can and make an appointment with your doctor.

yes you need to see the doctor. i dropped a plate on my toe and it pussed up. well i thought mine was healing and i have diabetics. well guess what it was infected and it didn't feel bad and i do have feeling in my feet still. well anyhw the doctor nearly had a coronary. yes you needt o go cause its harder for us to heal with the feet being so far from the heart and you can have something removed because you didn't go so please go and have it checked out.

Put some Neosporin on it. If it doesn't heal, see a doctor.

I would wait a day or two because it doesn't sound severe but if it becomes swollen and red and stuff like that then you should have it be checked on
