I have an LED lantern I take. What I did was get some velcro with a sticky back side and stuck it to the ceiling of the tent. It's just a small piece, so it doesn't affect storage. Then I hang the lantern on there so it's up high.
Outside the lantern just sits there, a bit away from the tent so bugs aren't in the tent. I have two I take with me, both are LED. I've never had the batteries go dead and I don't even take spare batteries.

I presume you're talking about outside the tent - don't bring it into the tent itself. We have a rod to hang it on. The bottom goes into the ground and you hang the lantern on the top. It's fairly tall and allows the light to shine over a wide area. They also make double curved rods for hanging plants in a tree that work equally well for lanterns. The top curve (which is larger) goes over a sturdy branch, and the lower curve is perfect for hooking the lantern onto. Have fun!

I personally use a grill / lantern tripod that you can hang your lantern on in place of the grill surface. Picked one up the day after my kids knocked over my brand-new lantern and broke the glass.
Still take all the kids camping, still use my lantern, hasn't got broken since.
Wal-Mart sells them at a very reasonable price

Use a wire hook (wire clothes hanger works) and hang from a tree limb.
