I am Nuclear Engineer and have always been interested in solar power. I have friends with it, but always thought it could not be practical for most of us because of cost. I love the approach Ed Begley and these people have taken. It is a great idea, and may be the way we can really take advantage of this wonderful energy supply.

If solar energy were cost effective you should be able to incorporate the cost of solar panels into the constructin costs of a home and tack that onto your 30 year mortgage. The additional cost of mortgage should be off-set by the savings in electricity. At this point in time, this is not possible.

As soon as it IS possible you will see a boom in solar like you've never imagined. People aren't stupid. It isn't the initial costs thats stopping solar from taking off. It is the FACT that you'll lose money putting it in.

The only possible exception is the use of government subsidies, but this is not true cost effectiveness since you are taxing others to pay for YOUR energy.

Financially it cost the home owner more using this approach but would help save the planet.

It is a good idea for people who just like the idea of having solar electric on their homes or businesses. No upfront cost is a plus.

Now the problem with this is you are still renting your electric and you don't own anything. However this is proof that there is savings in using solar over the local utility. If there were not money in it citizenre could not install it and rent it to the home owner and make money.

Renting electric is the same as renting a home. You in the end don't own anything. May as well just stick with renting power from the utility.

As u r aware, using nuclear energy even for peaceful purposes is always fraught with syndromes of danger and Chernobyl is still green in our memories. U R right in thinking about solar power as the best alternative. Natural resources r being over exploitation and this should be stopped immediately.
I had given a suggestion to World Bank regarding this and was honored for my innovative proposal aimed at grassroot level initiative for preservation of natural resources in May 2007. Have a look at http://dmblog.worldbank.org/ or http://del.icio.us/vasanthmysoremath wherein u will find a simple method of saving millions of units of electrical energy being misused during day time when the sun is shining outside. I have successfully implemented this method at my home and reduced my bill and saved energy. My proposal does not involve any nano-technology nor requires billions of dollars for R&D. It simplly suggests to people to bring home the sunshine and have moonlight effect inside your homes with help from sunligh during day time when the sun is shining.
