that she was recently diagnosed with both herpes and genital warts. She told me she also has a really bad rash right now and it's itching her and it's painful.

So now, I am paranoid beyond belief and I'm wiping down and nearly sterilizing the toilet (we share the only bathroom) seat before I go to the bathroom. Should I be really worried, or should I keep doing this, or go to a friends' in our complex?

Serious responses only please.

I understand your concern, but you really have nothing to worry about!

Genital herpes and HPV (the virus that causes genital warts) can NOT be spread by using a toilet seat after someone, using a shower or tub after them, using a chair after them, a pool, jacuzzi, etc. You need DIRECT skin to skin contact.

I have had both genital herpes and HPV for over 6 years now. I lived with my parents and brothers most of those 6 years (I contracted the virus when I was 17). NONE of my family members ever got genital herpes or HPV from me by using something after me like the toilet or shower. I've also had several other family members and boyfriends (now ex's) use the bathroom after me and NONE of them ever contracted either virus. They're just not spread that way.

Good luck!

You have nothing to worry about ... and don't let your flatmate know what you have been doing in terms of sterilizing etc because it will cause her unnecessary emotional stress. She obviously trusts you a lot to have confided such a personal piece of information in you. Respect that trust.

"It is generally considered that the spreading of genital herpes through inanimate objects such as soaps, towels, clothing, bed sheets, toilet seats, and spa surfaces is highly unlikely because the herpes virus cannot live very long outside of the body"

there is absolutly no way that you are going to get herpes or genital warts from your friend, unless you decide to have sex or oral sex with her. You cannot get it from sharing clothes, towels, cutlery or a toilet seat. Relax and be appreciative that she told you, because it must have taken some guts for her to do.

i wouldn't really be worried. std's like this cannot be transferred on a toilet seat. genital warts is a symptom of hvp and can only be spread if your virgina touches her virgina, witch i hope there is none of that going on, lol. and herpes is the same. and don't make her feel bad ether

Herpes is a very delicate virus and hpv also. Usually they are transmitted through skin to skin contact. You are safe.

The only way you could get those from the tiolet would be if you were sitting on her lap at the time! So relax.
