I think it usually takes about a week to 10 days to get over a cold. The best you can do is:
1) wash your hands often to keep from reinfecting yourself;
2) use only medications that deal with the symptoms you have;
3) if you need to sneeze or cough, do it into your sleeve, not your hand;
4) get lots of rest and reduce daytime activity if possible.

There is a viral upper respiratory infection that has been making the rounds this summer. It lasts 6 weeks-2 months and all you can do is treat symptoms and wait it out.
For the cough try dextromethorphan-there is a 12 hour formulation called Delsym that works well. To get some sleep try Benadryl-it dries secretions and also will help you feel drowsy. If OTC meds don't work for you, go back to the doctor and ask about some cough syrup with codeine. Use cautiously if prescribed-you need to clear the mucus sometimes, meaning cough-if it stays in your lungs germs just love it, then you will get a nice secondary bacterial infection that may take another 2-3 weeks to clear up.
Of course, plenty of fluids, a nutritious diet and if you want to try things like zinc or echinacea they certainly won't hurt you. Good luck.

This could be allergies. Its that time of year.They can cause symptoms not unlike the ones for a cold. Start taking LOCAL honey to help your body develop immunities to all the air born irritants around you-pet dander, smog, pollen, dust, etc. To clear out the sinuses, put 2 teaspoons of salt in half a glass of warm water and inhale by the teaspoon into your nostrils. This will wash out the mucus and stop any infection up there. Don't blow your nose too hard or you will create lesions that will be prone to infection. Like all herbal remedies, it will take a while to work but you will be CURED of allergic reactions. Local honey is 100% natural, has no side effects and will not leave you will long term physical problems like inhalers and prescriptions do. Of course, keep drinking juice, get into a healthy sleep pattern and eat right.

I don't many colds anymore. Discovered I could completely stop them in their tracks by sucking on a zinc lozenge the second I notice symptoms, and every two hours until and at bedtime.
But...when I did get colds, my theory was that whatever I could do to sleep well is the key to recovery. Namely, to STOP the stuffed up nose or cough--using ANY kind of medication, is the only way I could adequately sleep. Sleep is your repair time.
Also, taking plenty of Vit. C is said to shorten a cold. I would take at least 5000 mgs of Vit. C stirred in orange juice and sip on it all day. You don't noticed it's doing anything at first. But if you keep up, they say, it does shorten it.

Maybe you have asthma or allergies. I have both and during some times of the year I have a cough caused by nasal drip (because of allergies), which inflames my asthma. Strangely enough 95% of the nasal drip drains into my lungs (sometimes causing bronchitis), rather than through my nose.
