Have you not consulted your Cardiologist all these 5 years. I think you are taking the medication only with his suggestion and prescription. From what you have stated it is difficult to assess the position. However from the symptoms I feel you have some high blood pressure problems.

ATENOLOL - is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent. Atenolol blocks the action of the sympathetic nervous system, a portion of the involuntary nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates the pace of the heart beat. By blocking the action of these nerves, atenolol reduces the heart rate and is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms. Atenolol also reduces the force of heart muscle contraction and lowers blood pressure.

ATIVAN (Brand name) - Basic drug - Lorazepam is a tranquilizing drug used in managing anxiety, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, and seizures.-

There is no cure for primary hypertension, but blood pressure can almost always be lowered with the correct treatment. The goal of treatment is to lower blood pressure to levels that will prevent heart disease and other complications of hypertension. In secondary hypertension, the disease that is responsible for the hypertension is treated in addition to the hypertension itself. Successful treatment of the underlying disorder may cure the secondary hypertension.

Treatment to lower blood pressure usually includes changes in diet, getting regular exercise, and taking anti-hypertensive medications. Patients with mild or moderate hypertension who don't have damage to the heart or kidneys may first be treated with lifestyle changes.

Lifestyle changes that may reduce blood pressure by about 5 to 10 mm Hg include:

* reducing salt intake
* reducing fat intake
* losing weight
* getting regular exercise and brisk walking of 6 kms
atleast
* quitting smoking
* reducing alcohol consumption
* managing stress.

I suggest you to be in consultation with your doctor and regularly moniter the Blood Pressure and take the medication as perescribed, in addtion to taking the meassures mentioned by me above. -
