I find it in the Asian food section at my local grocer - pretty easy to find actually. It is similar to a barbeque sauce, with an Asian twist - very yummy! I make some killer short ribs with it!

Hoisin is very comon in the asian isle of most groceries. Meijers, Wallmart, Kroger, Giant Eagle all carry it (Ohio). There is nothing quite like Hoisin so try to get it. If in a pinch, a good barbeque sauce mixed 50:50 with Plum sauce (but if you can find Plum you'll find Hoisin) with added dry mustard will work.

Any Chineese food store will carry this item--it is a sweet jam-like sauce (dark brown to black in color), and depending on what part of China it is made in, it will either be made from soy beans, brown beans or a wheat-flour base. I love it on lamb chops--in fact, I beleive it was created especially for flavoring lamb by the Mongols!
You can also find it in the Chineese section of most supermarkets nowadays!

this is a chinese dipping sauce. Literally, Hoision means seafood. But there actually is no seafood in the sauce whatsoever.
Traditionally, it is made using sweet potatoes. But also can be made from fermented soybeans. You add garlic, vinegar and chili peppers tothe sauce as well. It is almost like a...say...a sweet noodle sauce (also known as sweet bean sauce or sweet soybean paste) but not as pungent. Now if you have like a mandarin style hoisin sace, it has water, sugar, rice, wheat flour & preservatives.
I personally don't like it but my fiancée does.

Hoisin is one of the best condiments you'll ever put in your mouth. It is sometimes called Chinese Barbecue Sauce.
Others have shared recipes, and it is also available in supermarkets everywhere. Seek it out and use it. It is well worth it.
I use it for pork, chicken, beef; for spring rolls (dipping sauce), etc. It is a staple for my home pantry.
