AIDS develops AFTER the person has contracted HIV. AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV. AIDS and complications from AIDS is what a person dies from.
HIV can be contracted by birth (if the mother has HIV/AIDS), through sex (vaginal, oral, and anal), by sharing needles/syringes with a person who has HIV/AIDS, or by a blood transfusion with HIV/AIDS infected blood.

AIDS/HIV is transmitted in bodily fluid exchange.
It can be transmitted via sexual contact (homosexual AND heterosexual), blood transfusions, breast feeding, blood exchange in childbirth, sharing intravenous needles and a variety of other means.
If a mother has Aids, the baby can be infected in utero, during birth or if breast fed. Some are lucky enough to survive all these risks, but end up orphaned at a young age. Sad.

Babies can be born with AIDS if their mother is HIV positive, but sometimes the mother can be HIV positive and the baby can be HIV negative. Not sure why.
