That's perfectly fine, but if you are worried about the environment, you could always go with the hybrid. They're more expensive at first, but much cheaper when it comes to gas, saving you tons of money later. Plus they're great for the environment. My family of five has the Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited and it's great (Two fold up seats in the back, fits seven)

Sometimes an SUV is much more practical than a smaller vehicle, and much more fuel efficient in the long run. In some cases, taking multiple trips in a smaller vehicle is much more wasteful than a single trip in an SUV. The green people who refuse to acknowledge that an SUV can have a practical purpose needs to stop following the crowd, and think for a moment. A minivan won't work for all of the same applications as an SUV. Although there are now hybrid SUVs, not everyone can afford the initial investment.

I know two people who drive Cadillac Escalades.
The woman I know drives a '99 Escalade with 129,000 miles on it. She has four kids who have to be hauled to school events, practices, etc. all the time. She works in a bar and often doesn't get off work until 3:30 or 4:00 a.m., then has to drive 15 miles home on back country roads, sometimes through 4' snow drifts, ice or flooded areas.
The SUV always gets her through. She saves gas by trying to plan as few duplicate trips as possible, driving sensibly, keeping her tires properly inflated, and religiously maintaining her car.
The guy I know drive a 2007 Escalade, for which he traded his '06. He's single, lives less than two miles from his work place, and makes no attempt to conserve fuel or drive responsibly. Everyday he drives his SUV to work, where it sits in the parking lot for 8-12 hours until he drives home. He probably doesn't drive 5,000 miles a year. He loves talking about his SUV and impressing dates with its luxury accessories, which he seldom uses other than when he's trying to make an impression on someone. This guy is not "rich" - his car payments are more than his house payments!
My point being: sometimes an SUV makes sense. Sometimes a Chevy Cavalier would be more practical.

SUVs do have a place. Just try to get one that's fuel efficient. I have a family of 4 and anything smaller than a minivan just doesn't work with our family. At 5 feet 9 inches, I'm the shortest one in my family.
The main problem with SUVs is that there are so many people who don't really need a large vehicle who drive them just to get back and forth to work. Those are the people who should really look at smaller vehicles.

Nothing, if that's what works best for you family. I get crap for driving a Jeep. Some girl I didn't even know came up to me in a parking lot the other day and asked me why I drive a "gas guzzler." She didn't even realize that the Compass gets 28 mpg. People have just come to think that SUV = bad.

What is wrong with anyone who wants one buying a large SUV. This is the meaning of a free society, individuals are allowed to make choices based on what they feel is best for them. I realize that the liberal elite would have it other wise, since their core belief is that they, and not you or I, know what is best for all of us and that we should all be compelled to to do what they think is best. Of course, they are always exempt from these mandates as they are after all, better than the rest of us.

Environmentalist complain about the people who buy SUVs that don't need them. Not about people who do. There are many people who buy a SUV, but don't really need or use it's capacity.

It doesn't matter. Use up all the oil you can, we can always send troops into Saudi Arabia.
Wow, 5 thumbs down, I done good this time.
As an ex- Explorer owner, I agree that the SUVs have their place. I wish I still owned it because I don't drive much more than back and forth to the lumber yard. But I was being responsible and a little cheap and ended up with a Corolla which I love. What fries my butt is seeing a single person driving a Hummer or similar gas pig. It not only wastes gas, it does nothing to encourage the automakers to build anything else. It's nothing more than a status symbol to most people. What that make em, president of the idiots club?

It would be better for each of you six passengers to be riding a Prius. I assume 4 of you passengers are children. What you need to do to be green is you go in a Prius your wife go in another Prius. You need to have the kids grandparents pick them up and take them in their Prius's. Having 6 hybrid cars taking your family around will show the world your commitment to the green movement.

In your case this is perfectly justified. There are many things you can do to offset the impact, such as trying to get all of your errands and such done in as few trips as possible, driving the speed limit and making sure you have the right air pressure in your tires. Obviously with a family of 6, you need the space.
Peace!
