Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak.

Vesicular eruption caused by a virus, esp. herpes simplex or herpes zoster.

Genital: A persistent, recurring eruption of the genital or anorectal skin or mucous membranes, caused by herpes simplex virus (usually herpes simplex virus 2). It usually is spread by intimate contact and is classified as a sexually transmitted disease. Worldwide about 85 to 90 million people are infected.


Symptoms: Patients often experience local pain, itching, burning, dysuria or other uncomfortable sensations that sometimes begin before a rash appears on the skin. The rash consists of a reddened patch, dotted by small blisters or pustules. It typically takes about then days to heal. Systemic symptoms (such as fever and malaise) sometimes accompany the initial outbreak or recurrences. However, asymptomatic shedding of the virus is common, and may represent the most common way in which the virus is transmitted from person to person.
