So much complaining about the horrible smell, the so-called secondary smoking. I want to know how many of these people drive cars? I object most strongly to the fumes and pollution they cause. I know we are not going to get rid of cars - my point is that all those moaning about cigarettes don't consider they they are causing problems too. By the way I am an ex smoker.

A lot of you are not getting the point. Whether passive smoking is dangerous has NOT been proven. What test have been carried out to determine the health risks of vehicle exhaust? Stupid remarks about children being shut up in a room 24 hrs a day with cigarette smoke are not helpful. How much choice do we have regarding inhaling
exhaust fumes?

What you're saying makes a lot of sense to me. If I'm in a car stuck in stationary traffic behind any vehicle belching out fumes, I feel as though I'm going to be sick and I can have a severe asthma attack. This doesn't happen to me if I'm somewhere with smokers. AND (all you anti-smoking ppl please note) I can hardly get out of my car and go somewhere else without causing a giant traffic jam and annoying an awful lot of people. Whereas if someone is smoking near me I can just walk away. Why don't these anti-smoking people just walk away if someone lights up near them? And, no, I don't smoke.

Here is the nitty gritty little nell.Being a mechanic for most of my life i can relate to the pollution and fumes.Heres the twist, being a non smoker i found i had cancer of the throat and lost most of my neck area in a ten hour operation I use a machine to talk with, and breath through a hole in my neck.Ive never been a pub goer or drinker,so it says one thing, inheritance. My mother had it and all four of her siblings had it and so on.But i am not bitter about it,these things happen to someone and this time it was me There are plenty of other things that also need looking at,but for the time being smokers are the escape goat One day when tobacco is extinct they will find something else to direct the public eye towards, which saves us looking at what there doing behind our backs Thank you and stay lucky

I have never been a smoker. I think that adults have their own choice to make about smoking, but this does not mean that others need to breathe their smoke. Comparing smoking to the pollution caused by cars is like comparing apples to pizza. Smoking has been proven to cause so many lung diseases, it's ridiculous. Second hand smoke has too. Studies have been done to prove this. What percent of people who live in a place where cars are driven will get lung cancer compared to the number who smoke or breathe second hand smoke.

I cant believe some of the answer/comments to this question!
The pollution that petrol from cars etc give out is actually killing the earth slowly, and in affect is doing as much damage to the earth as cigarette smoke 2 one another, In all aspects of every day life we are, with very few exceptions, abusing the earth and each other.
We try to excuse WHY we do it with any reason that we feel excuses our consciences, but all in all we use these damaging substances because we feel they simply make our lives easier/calmer or just because we don't give a ****.

I highly dislike the smell of cigarette smoke, and I also find idling cars offensive. The greatest difference is that cars get me places I need to go. Cigarettes do nothing for me. Also, the smell of "car" does not stick to one's clothes afterwards (unless you work closely with them), whereas ciggy smoke does cling, and give people bad breath.

I don't know what your question is, and I see your point, but it is rather moot when you weigh other factors, cons, and benefits.

I am also a reformed smoker. And reluctant car driver.

Unfortunately the motor car is a necessary evil in todays world, many of us have to travel quite a long way for work, even shopping is now on the outskirts of towns, plus it is a way for whole families to go out for family free time, the motoring industry has been cleaning up the emissions for years now and compared to the emissions of twenty years ago we have made big improvements, smoking on the other hand has absolutely no benefits, only causing problems for those that smoke in the way of serious illnesses and those that do not smoke, discomfort, illnesses caused by passive inhaling of smoke, the smell of it on my clothes when I go to places where people were allowed to smoke and for me a sore throat the following day, how nice it is for non smokers to be able to go to a pub, cafe, restaurant, travel by train or bus or be in any enclosed public place without having to suffer the residue of other peoples habits, perhaps one day we will be able to travel in cars that give out zero pollution but at the moment we have to use what is available to us and in any case, many many smokers also drive cars therefore they cause both kinds of pollution. Smokers have caused me discomfort all of my life by smoking where ever they wanted to with total disregard to how it effects people that don`t smoke and sometimes continuing even knowing how it effects others.
Chris.

well this may shock some, but i am a respiratory therapist with one lung. i hate the anti smoking campaign. there are many places people can smoke where it doesn,t affect me. but, when the politically crowd is hell bent on an issue we all suffer. i agree it can cause emphysema, asthma, etc... and it would be wiser not to do it. but, its about personal freedom. i don,t like to see piercings all over someones face, or pants half way down there butt, but its personal preference. if a man were to walk in front of a semi to kill himself would you outlaw trucks, of course not then if a person wants to smoke, go for it. since we are on the personal abuse subject i,ve seen more lives, ruined, families broken up, death from alcohol. why isn,t this a big issue. food for thought.

Depending on what city you live in...second hand smoke from cars may not be a huge health issue. But second hand smoke from cigs no matter where you live is bad, especially if a child is in the room with you.

Not very many children are subjected to a car's engine running inside a house all day and night.

I chose to give up smoking over 8 years ago but if other people choose to smoke then that is their choice too.

Personally i find the smell of a pipe quite relaxing.

What about the pollution from lorries and buses pumping out diesel fumes, worse than cars any day.
