Please know in advance that he will get very little out of the party at his age, so you should plan the activities around the average age of the other children who will attend. Generally, a one year old party is mostly for family, cousins, etc.

It would be great if you could have water games like a water balloon toss, a water slide, yard games like yard darts, bean bag toss, sack races, watermelon eating contest or seed spitting contest, relay races with an egg on a spoon, that sort of thing. You can even do a fishing game where you can put up a large box that you can get from appliance stores or places who do shipping, have a helper inside and when the hook comes down into the box, the helper puts a prize on it. Dowels for the poles are inexpensive and the hook is a paper clip. You can spray paint the box and put fish cut outs on the outside.

Younger children need physical activities to keep them interested as they have short attention spans.

A pinata is a lot of fun, too. All of these suggestions are inexpensive and you can give out little prizes that are novelty items.

Hope this helps.

He's 1.

He doesn't need a big party - he doesn't care as long he's fed, dry - he's fine. 1-year-olds will have no memory of the big celebration. Just take a lot of pictures (for proof that he really did stick frosting up his nose and laughed about it)

Seriously - a simple party for family and close friends. A short, sweet celebration is recommended to accommodate baby's nap time.

Sing "Happy Birthday" - have everyone clap! The only other entertainment necessary may be crayons or coloring books for older toddlers who may be present. Or a couple of very simple games.

Bozo Buckets. Put little buckets like beach pails in a row and have the kids stand at the end of the row. They throw a ball or beanbag into them and win a prize for each bucket they make. Going from the closest one to the farthest one.

Get a pile of sawdust on a tarp and throw coins into the sawdust. Have the kids dig for the coins. Start with the youngest kids. Give them so many minutes to search.

Hang up a hoola hoop like from a tree branch or something and have them stand at a line and throw a football, frisbee or something through it.

Tug of war. Kids at each end of a rope and pull against each other. The group that gets pulled over a line in the middle loses.

Try this themed birthday kit. You can throw a Bug party, A Jungle Jamboree, A dinosaur party, a carnival party. I found this kit at
http://www.dominosugar.com/birthdays/
You can print out invitations, name tags, place mats. Activity ideas, recipes for snacks. I can't wait to throw my niece her 4Th birthday party using this.

You don't really need to do much - he won't remember a thing. Just plan a small get together with family, have cake and ice cream, that's pretty much it. Next year he'll actually have fun!
