My fiancee and I are hosting a buffet for our families: 14 people in total. We're struggling with ideas for food to buy/put out for the lunch buffet and the tea buffet. Any suggestions appreciated!

well I guess it depends what sort of buffet you are going for. You can make a theme of it depending which food you want to put out. You can do a chinese buffet theme by putting out eggs rolls, lo mein, chicken with different sauces, fried rice, etc. A mexican buffet can be done with quesadillas, burritos, salsa and chips, etc (think of what is served at mexican restaurants). For italian, chicken parm, different types of pastas, etc. I think you get the point. If you're going general buffet, think like any buffet restaurants around where you live. They usually do generic items like roast beef, grilled chicken breast, chicken tenders, french fries, pizza. The great thing about a buffet is that you can serve ANYTHING! I personally like the idea of a themed buffet. It just looks more organized and "cute" (sorry, I'm a girl... I like themes). Good luck... but I'm sure you'll be ok with whatever you put out. People love to eat. Period.

have some fresh salads, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, coleslaw, and 3 bean. With some cold meats and cheeses, along with bread,.
Then have chicken or lamb kebabs ready to heat up for the hot food, and some wedges, and don't forget the dessert.

I hate when there is too much pastry items, like vol au vents , and sausage rolls etc. That's why I think you are best going with varied salads, esp, if someone is on a diet, or vegetarian, and keep it simple, you don't want to be away from the party slaving over food

For the lunch buffet put out ckicken, patatoes, aspargus and some mixed vegetables, and herb patatoes. You can make a lot of each easily which is really convientent. and for the tea buffet you might want to have a few selections of different teas like chai and green and put out some sugar cookies and finger sandwhiches. go to www.foodnetwork.com and they have all the simple great recipies.

For lunch, sub sandwiches is an easy option-buy assrted meats, cheeses, veggies and spreads-put everything out and let them build their own. Pasta might be good for tea, 2-3 different varieties with green salad and garlic bread. Hope that helps.

in my opinion, you can never go wrong with a little Italian. Maybe a tray of meatballs in red sauce, a pan of zit ti or lasagna.

Or I make this taco salad that goes over pretty well.

Mix 8 oz of cream cheese (softened) and 12 oz of sour cream with a packet of taco seasoning. Spread out in a pan ( i use those throw away aluminum pans). On top of that, layer shredded cheese (cheddar or mexican blend), olives, tomatoes(chopped), lettuce (chopped) and onion. Serve with a big bowl of taco chips. It's delish! Plus, no meat so everyone can enjoy. (well, except vegans, sorry about that vegans)
