I am a vegetarian and was wondering if there is a meat product in refried beans? If there is meat in it, is there a vegetarian version? Thanks for your help.

Here in Texas most restaurants make refried beans in a traditional manner..with Lard(pig fat). I understand that is not the case all over check with your server.
You can make your own without Lard, by using a veggie oil(olive or other you like). I use cans of Black or Pinto beans. Drained smash about 3/4 of them up. Add all to skillet wiht oil & warm stirring often. I you want to make them oil free use the liquid from the can or veggie broth.
Then depending on your taste add ground chili powder, can green chilis etc.

If you buy canned beans, be sure to check the ingredients. They may be made with animal fat. Some canned beans are vegetarian beans meaning they don't contain animal fat. If you have them at a restaurant, be sure to ask how they are cooked or rather refried. They may use animal fat to refry them.

Refried beans are traditionally cooked with lard, although you can find vegetarian (made with vegetable shortening) and fat free (just water, beans and salt) in the grocery store. In a restaurant, you have to ask; many use vegetable shortening these days but you wouldn't want to assume!

Yes, there is lard in most refried beans. Fortunately, you can get refried beans that are vegetarian. They will actually say vegetarian on them.

This company carries refried beans that are certified vegan.
Look for them in Target, Walmart, or Natural Food stores.
