A LOT of people have cold sores but not everyone. Cold sores are usually caused by HSV1, but it can also be caused by HSV2. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the world has cold sores.
Genital herpes is common, but not as common as cold sores. It's estimated about 25% of the world has genital herpes. Usually genital herpes is caused by HSV2, but it can also be caused by HSV1 (like in your case).
Good luck!

No, not everyone has it. Though most people once they reach adulthood have oral herpes, cold sores, on their mouth. Which is often passed via non-sexual means during childhood when family members are affectionate with kids.
1 in 5 Americans, 20% have genital herpes, either type. You are absolutely not alone!

I have HSV type I as well and it took me over a year to be comfortable with that knowledge. I actually set up a dating site for people with herpes as a result of catching the virus because I couldn't bear the thought of telling people.
However you are right, a lot of people have HSV type I but are unaware of it. I am not sure where you are located but certainly in Australia 80% of adults have HSV type I.
You might find the article I posted in the source interesting: http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/apr/27/carrie-seidman-lets-remove-shame-herpes-talking-ab/

It's common, but certainly not everyone has it.
Type 1, which causes cold sores (fever blisters)on the mouth, can occur in the genitals as well.
Usually Type 1 genital herpes is less severe, with much less recurrence than Type 2.
You are still contagious, unfortunately.

A majority of people have had exposure to Herpes virus type I (HSV-1). For example, 50% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies in their blood by the time they have become young adults; by age 50 or over, 80-90% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies. HSV-1 can occur in the genitals as well albeit quite a bit less frequently as it is more likely to be orally transmitted. HSV-2 is predominantly genital in location but infrequently can be oral as well.
You can read more about it on wiki as shown below. I hope this helps.
