A fish is an animal.
Vegetarians do not eat animals, regardless of "reason" for being vegetarian.
What you met was a very confused individual... or someone who insists on being called something s/he is not.
And yes, meat is the flesh of an animal.
Here is a link to the best informative vegetarian website in the world.

I think if you're vegetarian (I am) then you should not eat fish, no matter what the reason. Sure, you can just say it's not meat and eat it, they you can eat whatever else and say that's not mean either. And, that defeats the purpose of being a vegetarian. Maybe, fish is not classified as meat and is classified as seafood but personally I think vegetarians should not eat fish.

I imagine that it may be from the Christian idea of not seeing fish as meat. It used to be a rule for Catholics not to eat meat on Friday (or certain days, not sure). But they ate fish because it wasn't considered the same thing (a Bible rule, or something). So maybe it is from that.
I had a Catholic friend who did that, no meat on Friday but she ate fish. Difference in classification, I guess

Fish is flesh, therefore meat. It's not vegetarian. People who eat meat are not vegetarian. Pescetarians aren't vegetarians. Sure, they eat lots of vegetables, beans and grains, but they eat fish - not a vegetable. Vegetarians only eat foods derived from plants, hence the term VEGETARIAN.
Fake vegetarians can eat everything else. I meant what's next, people calling themselves bovine-aterians because they eat beef, but not fish, pork or chicken? I'm not a vegetarian because I eat cheese and eggs.
PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER THIS LACTO-OVO-PESCA BS. If you want the label so badly, they need to live up to the name.
Vegetarians and vegans are awesome and I aspire to be more like them, one day at a time.

Yes, indeed... fish is a meat and whoever is telling you that they are vegetarians and yet they eat fish.....well....they are just NOT.
A true vegetarian/vegan does NOT eat fish.
I have an aunt that calls herself "vegetarian" but she eats all kinds of meat... It just makes me sick when she calls herself a vegetarian...

You're absolutely correct: anyone who says they are a vegetarian and eats fish does not truly understand what a vegetarian is. I refer to those who eat only fish (not red meat, chicken, etc) as "pesca-tarians" (pescado = fish in spanish).
A vegetarian eats NO animals whatsoever...now vegans on the other had eat NO byproducts from animals either (dairy, honey, etc)...

it's meat to me. Fish have digestive tracks and hearts. It is not a vegetable, fruit, grain, or grass, it is not dairy, a nut, or a seed. It is an animal. If it is an animal it is meat. They can fool themselves into believing it is not meat, but they know deep down that it is.

I know that is so stupid that vegetarians think that fish is not a meat and it is still a living thing.
