For a long time there was a school of thought that believed that menstruating women did in fact attract bears, particularly grizzly bears .
At one time the NPS strongly advised menstruating women not to hike in the backcountry of Glacier NP & Yellowstone NP.
What prompted that NPS admonishment was an incident that had happened in Glacier NP many years ago where grizzly bears killed and ate 2 young women of which one or possibly both of them were menstruating at the time . The official thinking was that either menstrual blood or menstraul hormones had attracted the grizzlies.
There was a book written about the incident by Jack Olsen called The Night of Grizzlies and I think that Disney made a movie of the same name .
So all you guys that thought that her question was hysterically funny can stop laughing because it does have an historical basis.

They will pick up the scent they are very sensitive to changes in their environment. Most experienced back packers say however that you are not more likely to attract bears. Feminists who are backpackers (I have known many, some have logged more than 2000 miles over the years) insist that it makes no difference. Old timers(mostly men) say it can be a problem. The new wisdom says no problem, I trust to that.

No. Just don't wear a honey scented tampax. Bears are attracted to food smells and sweet smells. Blood doesn't attract them. Just don't go into the ocean where there are sharks.

Not so much in you as in your soiled feminine products. Bears are naturally curious and they have an excellent sense of smell. When I was a ranger we used to instruct women to place used pads and tampons in a few ziploc bags and then place those ziplocs in a bear bag with the rest of their food, trash, and smellables.
This is something you only have to worry about if you are going to be backpacking. If you are staying at a campground or in a cabin the need to be concerned is LOW. If you are car camping or staying in an RV then just keep them in a sealed ziploc with the trash.

Yes if there hungry what makes people think there not attracted to blood. There freaken bears
what do you people think happens in the woods the bears go back to the bear house and cook there steak til there medium-well. Ive never seen them put the salmon down cause its bleeding on them.
For everyone who thinks pooh bear only eats berries and honey next time you go camping take 3 uncooked t bones unwrap them and throw them in the middle of you campsite overnight. Oh and cougars or mountain lions they only drink milk and eat fancy feast.
Ive heard of several stories of people who've been dragged out of there tents who weren't on there period. Your gettin alot of stupid advice like its no big deal but if you bleed heavily you should be concerned. Depending on where your going.
I don't want to ruin your trip but to be honest with you would you go hiking with a raw pork chop around your neck. You ll probably be fine bear attacks are pretty rare but you should have some concern. Whatever you use its probably a good idea to burn the trash.

No. Bears most primary food source is nuts and berries, then fish. It is very rare that a bear will actually hunt and kill meat. They are not sharks, they are not attracted to blood. Yes, they will be able to smell you, but they won't care either. Also, for the amount of blood you are giving out at any given time, it would be the same as getting a scratch on your arm.
