I personally have never tried climbing the mountain, but one of my friends wants to later this month.
She isn't really in shape, and hasn't done a lot of hiking.

So thank you!

Remember, it's Camels Hump in Northern Vermont, US.
Thanks.

If you use the Burrows Trail and can keep at least a 1 mi. an hour pace. You should be able to top-out in a little over 2 hours. It is the shortest trail to the top, but it is steep and chances are you won't be able to keep that pace the whole time.

Out of shape is different than overwieight. I weigh 275 but I also hike 3 miles a day at least 4 times a week. Camel's Hump is a tough hike no matter which way you take it. It's either a long approach that takes stamina or a steep approach that requires strength. If your friend is just out of shape she might be able to do it. However if weight is the concern I'd suggest something much smaller to start with.

Camel's Hump is over 4000 feet. If you've never climbed a 4000 foot mountain before, this is not the one to make your first.

For an "out of shape person", thats guessing someone that doesn't or hasn't done some form of excercise consitantly, gaining about 3000 ft elevation over the course of 6-8 miles like you will on Camels Hump is going to be a pretty daunting task. I'd recomend getting her out to your local hills and start hiking a bit. I wouldn't recomend running them unless shes ready to be sore for the next few days, but if you have that time I say start running them. I'm a 24 year old male, and have done extensive hiking in the rockies. When I first ever started I wasn't in shape and had some misreable hikes. But I say go for it, just take a moderate pace for her, start out slowly and take plenty of breaks. Make sure she eats really good the days prior and get plenty of sleep. Good Luck!

Definitely do some preparation before you go . Practice hiking w/ a pack & plenty of water , Also dont forget your cell phone in case of emergency ;)
