I am a vegetarian. I lost a lot of weight and was quite slim when I first gave up eating meat, but it has crept back on now. I am a pretty average weight, could lose a few pounds for sure!
I think it is because we eat a lot of carbs. It is hard to feel full and satisfied without meat in our diet so we tend to try and fill up on breads and pastas and nuts and such.
Hope that helps.

It's very possible to be a fat vegetarian.
There are several meat-free products that have a high fat and calorie content. Fat cells are water soluble, so drinking colas instead of water will keep your body from using them easily when it needs to. Also, if she consumes too many calories but does not exercise, her body may be converting unused energy from healthy foods into stored fat.
Figure this: one tablespoon of butter has 90 calories while 9 baby carrots have only 35, in addition to vitamins. Who eats butter by itself? Add in a piece of wheat bread and you're up to 150 calories. Several nuts, baked goods, and dairy goods are also full of natural fats and oils. Fat has 9 calories per gram, protein and carbohydrates have 4 per gram, but carbs are converted to sugar, so your body doesn't use them first.
The food industry is creating a huge list of fattening snacks and meals out of once healthy dietary staples. Think french fries, fried green beans, fried macaroni & cheese, even a restaurant bought grilled cheese has about twice as much butter and cheese as is necessary.
It's typically less common to see a fat vegan (someone who eats no animal products at all), but if they use enough canola or sunflower oil making dinner, it's possible for them to gain unwanted bulk as well.

confident, in case you purely ate chips each and all the time. On effortless even with the incontrovertible fact that, we do devour much less fat on an afternoon-to-day foundation and so it relatively is less demanding to maintain your weight. i hit upon being a vegetarian in simple terms makes me pay plenty extra interest to what I consume in an afternoon - I make effective i'm getting adequate iron and protein and zinc and by employing that factor i don't have plenty room for fatty meals. yet confident, it relatively is obtainable.

Not all vegetarians have an ideal diet. Fried foods and certain junk foods can be vegetarian.
She's probably a lacto-ovo "vegetarian". Here's food that fits the category that can make a person fat:
French fries
Potato Chips
Fried foods: nachos, tacos
High fat dips, cheeses
Oreos and milk
Pizza
The list can go on forever. Just like there are thin omnivores, there are many fat "vegetarians".

A lot of less health-conscious veggies who are unaware of a lot of the healthier alternatives to meat will replace it with lots of bread and cheese. Meat is not the only thing that's bad for you and that packs on the calories :)

Of course! Vegetarians don't eat meat, but they CAN and mostly DO eat other junk food. Although I do get your point somewhat, a lot of veggies tend to be conscious of what they eat, etc.
Someone told me she fills up on meat 'alternatives', which aren't exactly healthy, and in my opinion, make her a bad vegetarian.

There are tons of junk food that are vegetarian friendly so if someone eats alot of it and does no exercise, they could get fat. Vegetarian means no animal flesh, not no junk food.

Definately.
Though you may not eat meat, you can still overeat vegetarian portions, causing you to be obese.
There are some people who's daily medications cause them to gain weight, regardless of 'vegetarian/non vegetarian' status.
So, to answer your question, yes, it's possible.
