There is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about! Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age and I can guarantee you that your doctor has seen it MANY times before you.

Also, it is NOT a STD, so there is nothing to be worried about!

Just tell your mom you would like to see the doctor because you have some irritation and ask her to make you an appointment (unless you can do all of this on your own).

The doctor can give you a prescription for metronidazole (brand name: Flagyl) and the infection should clear right up!

Good luck!

First of all. As far as your doctor goes, this is something that he/she has seen 2.5 million times and counting. Bacterial vaginosis is something that many women get for several different reasons. It is something that should be treated because it can lead to far more complicated things such as STDs and other issues. Your doctor won't think bad of you for coming in to have this taken care of. [S]he'll commend you on it because many women just let it get worse.

As far as your mother goes, chances are good that she at one point in her life had something similiar. Having a yeast infection or BV is something that just happens. I think that she'll be more understanding then you may think.

This is a normal part of being a woman. It sucks don't it? But ya know, it's something we have to deal with. Just know that you're not alone. I understand that it is a bit embarrassing, trust me I do. Tell your mother and more than likely she'll be more supportive of you than you'll realize. And with her support, going to the doc about it won't be a big deal.
