To answer this question, I'm assuming that this is actually GI tract related, not a heart problem.
If it's an occasional problem, then an over-the counter antacid like Mylanta, Mallox, Gaviscon, etc. could be fine. Also a type of drug called an H-2 blocker (Pepcid and others) also available over-the-counter is helpful for fairly prompt relief. (Take it in a combination with antacid or together with an antacid for even faster relief).
If the problem is frequent or persistent, you should consult your physician since it may be a symptom of GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disorder) where the esophagus is repeatedly exposed to stomach acid. This situation can sometimes lead to pre-cancerous changes in the esophagus (it doesn't like acid) called Barrett's esophagus. In a situation like this (frequent, persistent heartburn) your doctor may recommend further evaluation by a GI specialist to see whether Barrett's esophagus in in fact present.
Frequent or persistent heartburn is often treated the drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, esomeprazole (Nexium) and others. Of these only omeprazole is available over-the-counter in the US, but if you find yourself taking this regularly, you should see a doctor to find out if you need any additional evaluation or treatment.
If you have a lot of symptoms at night lying down, you might have GERD. One strategy for minimizing these symptoms is to avoid late- night snacking for at least an hour or two before bed.
Hope that this info helps.

You are describing acid reflux. If you have acid reflux (indigestion, heartburn) more than 2 days a week, this may be a symptom of a more serious condition called GERD.
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) (http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gerdinfant/images/fullbody-LES2.gif) does not close properly and stomach acids are forced into your esophagus, causing inflammation and erosion. This may cause a precancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus, which may lead to esophageal cancer. You do not have to have significant pain for GERD to be damaging your esophagus; often the only symptom is heartburn and hoarseness.
You may want to see a physician for evaluation if you experience acid reflux frequently. Medications such as proton-pump inhibitors (Nexium, acipHex, Protonix, Prilosec) may give you some relief. Be sure to discuss with your physician that there may be an early, tentative link between some GERD medications and cardiac problems (http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/early_comm/omeprazole_esomeprazole.htm).
The following article gives some good advice on what to eat/not eat and do/don't do if you have reflux:

Aloe vera juice is great. I have suffered for years (and I am only 40) with heart burn & even an ulcer. After starting to drink 6 ounces of aloe vera juice (you can buy it at walmart, target, k-mart, walgreens) I do not have it anymore. Keep it in the refrigerator and you can put it in juice. It actually relieves the acid & heals your esophagus (which is damaged over a period of time from the constant acid). Digestive enzymes help as well.

Zantac 75. I take it every night before bed but you can take it every 12 hours. Also, peppermint Tums help big time. For me, there hasn't been anything to prevent it. I get it everytime I eat no matter what I eat. Try chewing mint gum after meals and between meals to keep the acid down.

Put a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water and stir it up and drink it up !! This will alleviate an acid tummy, heartburn, gas, belching and wind rather quickly.
