86 is normal, but that may not be the whole story. If it's higher than that sometimes it may still be best for him to take medication, I really can't comment much on it without knowing a great deal more about the situation, but one normal blood sugar does not mean that someone is not a diabetic.

that's just a one time reading. if the doctor thinks he's diabetic, he should be checking it 3-4 times a day, also ask for a test called HgbA1C, this will give you an idea or average of what his sugars have been over the last 3 months or so. be sure to write down the the time the test was done, and if it was before or after eating.

86 is a good level but there is another test called the A1C and it shows basically an average sugar level for 3 months. Your dad's sugar level on the day of his blood test may have been good but his long term level my have been above average. Tell him to take the medicine the doc prescribed.

in my opinion 86 is kind of a low blood sugar level.i am a diabetic and whenever i have a reading in the 80's i feel a little shaky and lit headed. its better to try to keep the blood sugars between 95-120.just tell your dad to eat a little snack or change how much insulin he takes so his readings will be closer to the hundreds.

Your dad's body may not handle sugar well. It probably takes longer. He may have high test readings for awhile after eating, depending on what he eats. He needs to avoid sweets and eat whole grain carbohydrates.
