STATINS
-are a family of related compounds (lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin) used to treat hypercholesterolaemia. They act by inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMG CoA reductase), the first and rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis.
It is an oral drug for loweringcholesterol in the blood. It has been shown to reduce the occurrence of heartattacks, strokes and death caused by coronary heart disease. It belongs to aclass of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase Inhibitors, commonly called "statins".Other statins include simvastatin (Zocor), lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin (Lipitor) and fluvastatin (Lescol). Statins reduce cholesterol by inhibiting anenzyme in the liver (HMG-CoA reductase) that is necessary for the production ofcholesterol. In the blood, statins lower total and LDL ("bad") cholesterolas well as triglycerides. They also increase HDL ("good") cholesterol. LDLcholesterol is believed to be an important cause of coronary artery disease.Lowering LDL cholesterol levels slows and may even reverse coronary arterydisease. Raising HDL cholesterol levels also may slow coronary artery disease.
Scientists have discovered that inflammation of the coronary arteries alsomay contribute to coronary heart disease. Inflammation is associated withelevated levels of a protein called C-reactive protein. This C-reactive proteinin blood can be measured by a test, referred to as the "highly sensitive"C-reactive protein test (Hs-CRP). Elevated levels of Hs-CRP predict theoccurrence of heart attacks, strokes and death. In fact, Hs-CRP is a betterpredictor of heart attacks, strokes and death than cholesterol levels.Pravastatin reduces the levels of Hs-CRP and it has been suggested thatpravastatin may reduce coronary artery disease by reducing inflammation ratherthan, or in addition to, lowering levels of cholesterol.
So SIMVASTATIN and STATIN are one and the same and they are different brand names only. -

Simvastatin is a member of the Statin family. It has become a hot drug lately, most insurances are currently forcing their members to change to a statin(generic) and Simvastatin is hot in the news for it's Alzheimer's prevention. Simvastatin out of the three generic statins that are being pushed is the best overall for reducing cholesterol.

The statins (or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) form a class of hypolipidemic agents, used as pharmaceutical agents to lower cholesterol levels in people with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.
Simvastatin (INN) (IPA: [ˈsɪmvəˌstætən]) is a hypolipidemic drug belonging to the class of pharmaceuticals called "statins". It is used to control hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels) and to prevent cardiovascular disease. Simvastatin is a synthetic derivate of a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus.
Before taking simvastatin, tell your doctor if you have liver disease. Your doctor will probably tell you not to take simvastatin.
