If he like to garden have everyone bring an unusual plant or bulb in a similar type package.
If he has another hobby, try and think along those lines.
Serve something that he enjoys. Really, you have to forget the crowd for a moment and look at what "he" likes. Then just add comparable items to that for the guests to enjoy.
Think of a saying, something nice in banner form that can grace the wall. Make it fit him
Good luck!.

Everyone has given you food ideas, but I would like to suggest something a little different. Not knowing where you live, this may seem like a good idea, or an asinine one. Could you have someone ( in politics ) declare it to be his day? Is he a VET? Maybe they might do some little thing for him. Go on the web and see what is available to make someones 80th birthday special. I could go on, but I don't know anything more than he is going to be 80.

Anything that can be served buffet style where the guests can serve themselves is an easier way to handle a large party. If you really want to serve food, stick to simple foods, such as finger sandwiches of tuna, ham, chicken or egg salad. Have a vegetable trays with dips and bowls for chips. You can also have cheese trays, with crackers. You'll hardly have time for the cake and ice cream with only two hours, so don't make it too elaborate.

Since its just two hours I would serve finger foods. Does your dad ever talk about his favorite songs? Maybe you can make him a cd with songs he's loved over the years. To tell you the truth if your dad doesn't like a lot of flash and fuss. It sounds like your doing a great job.

As far as food, simple appetizers should be good based on the time. Maybe play some music from his time. (1930's-50's). Are there things that he likes? You don't really need to fill the time, since it will only be 2 hours.

I agree.
I'd just serve cake, ice cream, coffee, tea and an alcohol free punch.
Went to one just a few months ago and this is what they did.It was lovely.
If you want to serve more,I'd just do up small fancy sandwiches and a pickle tray.

Finger sandwiches, chips and dips, veggie tray. fruit tray, deviled eggs, assorted desserts.
If he doesn't like flash and fuss, just use nice matching paper plates,table-covers and glasses. Use flower arrangements and candles to decorate your tables.

If its just 2 hours at your church, I'd suggest just cake, ice cream, lemonade and coffee.
