Saffron is typically used in grain pilafs. And yes, it's very expensive.
Turmeric is poor girl's saffron and can be used pretty much the same way.

In India a very small quantiy of Kashmir Saffron stamens are mixed with milk,which would become yellow in colour and given to pregnant women,so that the children would be "Fair' in skin colour.I do not know whether it is real or superstition.
There is an Ayurvedic preparation called "Kumkum Aadhi Lepam" in Bhaishaja Ratnaavali(book) In Sanskrit Kumkum means Saffron--IMPCOPS-Chennai-India- prepares Good quality. It is claimed the preparation removes Black-Heads in the face.Now a days Western Face Mask manufacturers in India use some part of this receipie in their Preparations. God knows how effective it is!!

Add a little Saffron to your pot of rice when you start cooking it. The rice comes out with a slightly yellow tint and tastes great.

I would use saffron on rice... but yes....it is very expensive :(

Its used to make dishes, its very expensive if you have the real stuff. I personally would only use it for recipes that require it. I don't consider it an everyday seasoning.
