Most recently I changed over my basil insulin from Humilin N to Lantus. I currently take 16 units of Lantus at bedtime (11 PM) and when I wake up in the morning my sugars are almost to same as when i fell asleep. The problem occurs after I eat my breakfast. I eat the same thing as always for my breakfast which is a 1 Cup and a Half of Organic cereal which has alot of fibre with soy milk. When I go to test my sugars about 2 1/2 later i've been getting highs of about 12 - 14 mmoll. For this breakfast i take about 4 units of Humalog. I'm just wondering what is causing this....Is it because im not getting enough basal insulin at bedtime, I cant figure out why this is happening.

It could a couple of different thngs. You may need more Lantus at night, more humalog for the amount of food you're eating, or a combination of the two. I used to have this problem when I was on Lantus. My doctor and I decided in the end that I was needing a combo of both. It is definitely something you should be discussing with your doc though. Good luck!!

Sorry to tell you, but this is really the kind of question you need to address with a licensed health care provider. If money is an issue, see if there is a local public / county health department or a tele-health line [you call and talk to a registered nurse who can give advice]. Also try your local diabetes society / association. They usually have a variety of ways to help you get the information you need. There are enough variables that COULD be causing this to merit a call / visit to your doctor. How long has it been since you were seen and had a full medication evaluation? Have you had any other changes in your life recently?

I always urge anyone with questions about their medications to call their doctor - leave a message, or drive a note over to his/her office. They will be happy to answer any questions.

Humulin is the best and lantus. you should try takeing more humulin and keep lantus the same. what you actually need to do is get with a doctor who knows about this mess to do this and then you will be ok. maybe 9 humulin is the best and then lantus what you are taking at nite only. maybe you need to take 2 times a day or something like that. it all depends on certain things nad your doc should beable to tell you.
